Electrical product development engineer. Work cooperatively in a team environment to take ownership in the development of electro-mechanical sub-systems for hard disk drives. Identity problems, generates alternatives and implement solutions to problems that affect yield, quality, and reliability of the product. Tends to work on specialized technical problems and provides highly innovative yet practical solutions. Anticipates, prevents and identifies problems and risks, generates alternatives and creative solutions and implements them. Typically will work on multiple products/platforms simultaneously. This position takes the engineer through the whole development process from conceptualization, to modeling and performance prediction, design & supplier interface, component qualification and production release. Expectations include developing and implementing new methods of component/system characterization, fixturing and modeling tools. This position also requires mentoring and developing less experienced personnel in new methods and tools.
Identifies and defines technology programs that address strategic technical or company needs. Oversees applied research or advanced engineering in developing new products, materials, or processes. Consults with and provides guidance to other departments and senior management on advanced technical issues. Integrates diverse functions to meet internal technical needs. Is widely recognized as an expert within the industry; has external influence in the direction of the field.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Architects low cost, high throughput electrical process strategies
Develops embedded electronics for disk drives
Follows department processes and guidelines for hardware and firmware development
Provides technical leadership for department in related discipline(s)
Creates process development plans and schedules
Provides leadership to meet company goals and objectives
Works with cross functional teams to develop disk drive features compatible with company objectives
Works with the factory to develop factory processes compatible with company objectives
Finds root cause for disk drives that have failed
Investigates and solves product and factory issues
Initiates and hosts cross functional meetings to resolve development issues
Develops and validates solutions for issues related to disk drive electronics
Documents findings of engineering analyses and investigations
Implements new features for reduced cycle time and improved track quality
Creates design documents pertinent to the various phases of electronic development
Conducts and participates in requirement reviews, design reviews and code reviews
Prepares and delivers presentations for customer, supplier and internal meetings
Recommends solutions and plans to upper management
Promotes department policies
Sets an example of a positive, upbeat, constructive attitude
Trains and mentors less experienced engineers
May participate in the recruiting and hiring process
Stays current with firmware development methodologies
Leads in architecture development and improvement projects

BS 10 yrs. related experience, or MS 10 or more yrs. related experience, or PhD 10 or more yrs. related experience
Understands real-time embedded firmware concepts
Proficient in the design and development of real-time embedded firmware
Understands the hardware, firmware and ASIC development process and is capable of driving improvements to the process
Solve very complex technical problems related to hardware and firmware
Effectively lead complex hardware and firmware development projects
