The function of the Chemistry Prep Room is to prepare the materials for the laboratories used for teaching in the Department of Chemistry. The position is half time, on a temporary basis, requires morning hours, and reports to the Chemistry Prep Room Manager and the Science Center Director. The person who fills the position of Prep Room Technician must have a familiarity with chemical names, know how to handle chemicals and solvents safely and know how to make solutions of various concentrations using both percentages and molarities. The technician must recognize and understand how to use glassware common to a laboratory as well as small equipment such as balances and pH meters. Good communication skills are vital to this position and any candidate must be fully computer literate (e-mail, internet, Excel and Word).
In addition to Chemistry Prep Room duties listed above, the incumbent in this position will be responsible for working under the direction of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Office personnel and the Science Center Director to appropriately collect and dispose of hazardous waste from the teaching and research labs within the Science Center. Prior experience with hazardous waste management is preferred.
EHS-related training will be provided as needed and may include hazard communication, hazardous waste management, hazardous-materials transportation security & awareness and others as deemed appropriate for the position.
This position requires a B.A. or B.S. in Chemistry or a closely related discipline. The position requires the incumbent to be able to lift and transport boxes of up to 40 pounds, to push and/or pull carts with chemicals, glassware and bottles, prep materials, and/or hazardous waste throughout the facility, and to be able to stand or walk during much of the work period.
