Non-exempt; no benefits; part-time; up to 30 hours per week depending on class registration & work schedule; Monday – Friday morning & evening sessions; summer sessions planned thru the first week of August 2013.

This person will teach tennis skills and techniques (beginner through advanced) to individuals 5-15 years of age. Class sessions are located at various Frederick County schools and County parks. All classes are conducted on outdoor courts and are subject to rescheduling due to unfavorable weather. Equipment will be provided by the Division of Parks and Recreation. Supervision is received from the Recreation Coordinator.

Examples of Work:
  • Coordinate lesson plans and course outlines
  • Assure the return and condition of issued equipment and supplies
  • Compile and maintain record-keeping related to each class (e.g. attendance)
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Minimum age 16 years
  • Advanced knowledge of tennis skills, techniques and rules
  • Current certification in Community First Aid and CPR, or able to become so certified before sessions begin
  • Ability to effectively prepare and carry out USTA/Wilson tennis lesson plans (as assigned)
  • Ability to effectively evaluate emergencies and unexpected situations and promptly respond in an appropriate manner
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working/teaching relationships with students of all ages (individually and in groups), as well as with co-workers and the general public
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills in order to conduct classes and maintain data, forms and reports
  • Physical requirements include the ability to lead and participate in activities as described above, and to load, unload and set-up recreational equipment

Additional Information/Examination Process:
  • Ability to provide own transportation to teaching location and to other sessions/meetings as needed
  • Available for varied schedule to accommodate class times and Parks meetings
  • Available for training and Parks meetings before the program begins
  • Persons under 18 years of age must obtain a work permit before being placed in this job classification
