The main function of this position is to provide timely testing services and accurate data for thermal insulation products and raw materials in a safe and efficient manner. The incumbent must perform all aspects of physical, fire, corrosion, glass and raw material testing for a wide variety of insulation products and materials in accordance with CertainTeed and ASTM test methods. She/He will be responsible for providing timely test data and reports to laboratory management, product development and plant personnel. Since the technical information generated by the Test Engineer will be used to support time-sensitive product and process development projects, this individual must be responsive to the needs of the insulation business and have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
60% Testing: Perform standard and non-routine tests of products, prototypes, glass and raw materials; work on product enhancements and improvements in conjunction with Product Development engineers; serve as a project team member.
20% Reporting: Write clear, concise and accurate laboratory reports; develop and validate Excel spreadsheets for data acquisition; provide sound statistical assessments.
10% Arrange for testing of products and raw materials that can’t be tested internally with external laboratories and critically review their test reports.
10% Safety training; calibration, maintenance, upgrading of laboratory equipment (Instron, humidity chambers; furnaces; balances, thermal testers); validate data acquisition protocols
The Test Engineer will work closely with the laboratory staff, plant personnel and members of various project teams within the Product Development and Support groups. She/He will offer solutions and suggestions in response to their product and raw material testing needs. The incumbent must possess very good time management skills and be able to critically review test results and perform statistical analyses to support project decisions. Additionally, this person must thoroughly evaluate competitive products and materials and determine their compliance with internal and external specifications. The Test Engineer should be able to effectively manage up to 20 test assignments and maintain focus on multiple projects as priorities change.
Two to five years of laboratory and/or industrial experience with demonstrated competence in testing products and raw materials and an ability to evaluate building products for thermal, physical and fire, performance. Materials testing experience using mechanical testing instruments (i.e. Instron), testing chambers and high-temperature equipment is preferred. Test methods include ASTM (C16), ISO, Military and CertainTeed methods. The incumbent would be expected to complete a rigorous safety on-boarding program and stay abreast of current measurement technologies and instrumentation. This individual should be proficient with MS Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), statistical software (Minitab or NWA Quality Analyst) and data acquisition interfaces (Labview).
Bachelor Degree in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Ceramic or Mechanical Engineering
Overnight travel of approximately 10 -20 % per year.
