Work is performed under the supervision of an Engineering Supervisor. This is advanced professional civil engineering work involving a variety of engineering tasks related to municipal traffic engineering.

Work Performed
Prepares engineering designs, plans, specifications, and cost estimates for traffic control devices and signals. Participates in the review of construction and development plans and subdivision plats to ensure compliance with regulation and standards. Analyzes traffic impacts from new development or redevelopment projects. Prepares transportation improvement program and traffic impact studies; performs traffic engineering analyses. Prepares and maintains a variety of engineering documents which may include plans, specifications, contracts, maps, standards, and policies. Maintains and updates sign inventory and accident databases. Develops geographic information systems. Drafts resolutions, ordinances, and memos for City Council consideration. Prepares technical reports on traffic and related issues for departmental usage. Answers inquiries and complaints from the public regarding such issues as traffic signal problems, school crosswalks, and neighborhood traffic concerns. Conducts research, evaluates and makes recommendations regarding proposed and existing facilities and services; conducts system planning studies. Plows snow during weather emergencies. Performs related duties as needed or assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and three years of experience in professional traffic engineering or closely related work, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: Thorough knowledge of professional civil engineering principles, practices, and methods. Thorough knowledge of traffic standards and regulations. Considerable knowledge of traffic related computer applications. Ability to prepare traffic reports and studies. Ability to prepare accurate plans, specifications, cost estimates, and engineering reports for traffic projects. Ability to maintain a variety of technical reports, information, and records. Ability to make accurate engineering computations and drawings. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to prepare reports of a complex technical nature. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, City officials, planners, engineers, architects, and the general public. Excellent work history and attendance record. Must possess Engineer in Training ( EIT ) certification to qualify for Engineer I classification and must be registered as a Professional Engineer (PE) to qualify for Engineer II classification.
