Responsible for tasks associated with the successful operation and maintenance of the computerized signal system. Continuously optimizes performance of the City's traffic signal system to enhance mobilty and safety. Proactively monitors the City's traffic signal system by coordinating with local law enforcement and military officials, utilizing remote video surveillance, responding to citizen complaints and regularly collecting/analyzing traffic count data. Implements system adjustments to address safety and capacity constraints. Coordinates with emergency responders and reacts accordingly to facilitate safe and efficient traffic movement before, during and after emergency events. Oversees scheduled maintenance of the system and negotiates reimbursement agreements with NCDOT for maintenance costs. Maintains the future capacity of local roadways by working with the Metropolitan Planning Organization to establish priorities that address short-and long-term roadway needs, provide feedback on traffic impact analyses for private developments and working with the City's Engineering Division to plan/implement capital improvement projects. Conducts other traffic engineering functions as needed.

Thorough knowledge of ITS concepts, data communications and computerized traffic signal system equipment, signal operations and maintenance work flow, priorities, policies, and procedures; working knowledge of signal optimization software packages, AUTOCAD and PC-based programs to include Microsoft Office, GIS, etc.; knowledge of the National Electric Code, National Electric Safety Code, NCDOT Traffic Signal Specifications, NCDOT Signal & Geometrics Design Manual, NCDOT Maintenance Schedules C & D, MUTCD and other related traffic signal standards; excellent oral and written communication skills; outstanding planning and organizational skills; ability to work with other engineers and maintenance technicians performing traffic signal work; ability to utilize electronic maintenance tools; ability to schedule work in an efficient manner; ability to coordinate work with City Departments and other outside agencies; ability to quickly learn City ordinances relating to traffic signals, traffic operations and lighting.

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major in Civil Engineering or related field and at least three years of progressive signal system engineering/traffic engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional Engineer certification preferred.

Valid North Carolina Driver License. Must be available on call.

SALARY RANGE: $51,490 - $82,384
