High school diploma, G.E.D., or foreign education equivalent to a US Accredited High School Diploma and two years experience installing and maintaining traffic devices or similar work experience
Combination of education and experience equivalent to three (3) years of paid experience in a similar position as listed in the Examples of Work
Must possess a valid Minnesota class "B" driver’s license and ability to operate GVW 26,001 lbs. or greater with an air brake endorsement. Minnesota class "A" driver's license is preferred.
NOTE: Individuals will be required to complete a pre-employment drug test per the Omnibus Transportation Testing Act of 1991, Department of Transportation rule, 49 CFR part 40 and will be subject to subsequent testing as required per the regulation.
Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid Minnesota drivers license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years
Nature of Work:
Under general supervision of the Transportation Supervisor – Construction & Traffic, work involves performing traffic services in design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of highway signs, work zone traffic controls, and pavement markings. Work is reviewed by a technical or professional superior for degree of accuracy required in accordance with the Minnesota Standard Sign Manual and compliance with Minnesota Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Examples of Work:
Fabricates highway signs and barricades in accordance with National and State Standards.
Regularly inspects and evaluates the condition of signs and traffic control devices to ensure ongoing compliance with the requirements of the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and County specifications including, but not limited to, minimum retroreflectivity, placement, and visibility.
Performs maintenance of road signs and work zone traffic controls.
Keeps detailed and accurate records of installation and maintenance activity using Microsoft Access and Excel.
Places and maintains temporary road work signing, detour signing, and barricades according to MUTCD, Temporary Traffic Control Zone Layout Field Manual, and County requirements.
Performs on-street layout of pavement markings, applies markings, and removes conflicting markings.
Operates and maintains sign installation/maintenance equipment.
Operates striping equipment for line marking and intersection pavement marking needs.
Computes daily/weekly/seasonal materials (posts, signs, paint, beads, etc.) needs for the crew operation.
Acts as a lead worker to seasonal workers for sign installation, maintenance, and pavement marking activities.
Flag and marks signs for utility locates. Communicates (by phone, fax,and meetings) with locators and utility companies for safe installation of signs and to ensure sign placement is in accordance with Pipeline Safety Commission requirements.
Be available to assist the maintenance fleet as an additional snowplow driver during snow events as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Basic knowledge of the Minnesota Standard Sign Manual and Minnesota Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices
Knowledge of care and use of spray painting equipment, silkscreening equipment, and related materials
Skilled in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials used in the sign shop
Ability to work under pressure situations in moderate to heavy traffic
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public
Ability to use different equipment such as scotchlite applicator, air operated post driver, cutting torch, and sign truck
Ability to adjust daily work schedule to allow for emergency work projects
Assists in maintaining an inventory of signs, blanks and posts In compliance w/the Americans with Disabilities Act the following represents the Physical/Environmental Demands: This position requires a majority of time spent standing and walking as well as lifting. Weight of objects to be lifted, carried, pushed or pulled will range from ten (10) to fifty (50) pounds. Climbing of stairs and ladders is essential. Walking and standing on rough and uneven terrain. Movements such as stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and bending are sometimes required. Other movements such as reaching and handling of materials are often required. Audio, visual and verbal functions are vital aspects of this position as well as the ability to operate a motor vehicle and other various types of equipment. The majority of the workday is spent outdoors with exposure to dust, fumes, noise, heights, extreme heat as well as extreme cold.
