One to two years previous medical interpretation preferred. Certified Medical Interpreter / Translator in an English language required.

The Medical Interpreter / Translator will interpret the spoken word of the customer into English language for hospital medical staff responsible for the customer / patient’s care or business transaction with the hospital as well as ensuring the English language of hospital staff is interpreted and understandable in the client’s native language. The Medical Interpreter / Translator will also be responsible for translating written documents from English to another language based on customer needs.


  • Respond to the need of a non-English speaking hospital customer when called by:
  • (a) Listening to the customer’s concerns regarding a patient billing matter.

    (b) Listening to the customer / patient’s verbal description of a possible medical problem.

    (c) Listening to the patient / customer’s relatives regarding the above.

    (d) Interpreting the spoken word of the above patient/customer or relative into English for hospital staff, until either:

    (a) The customer’s needs are satisfied

    (b) The Patient’s needs are met, or,

    (c) The “language line” may be utilized to ensure appropriate translation of medical terminology to Mary Lanning Healthcare medical staff.

    (e) Translating any written documents from English to the customer native language or from the customer’s native language into English.

    (f) Become familiar with hospital policy and procedures including the registration process, HIPPA, NeHI and other essential information that may need to be interpreted/translated for the customer.

    (g) Assist hospital staff with the registration process including collecting information and registering the customer for pre-op surgeries and procedures.

    (h) Help inform customers of lab and test results under the direction of the medical staff.

    (i) Call and schedule the customer for initial and follow-up appointments with the medical staff.

    (j) Promotes positive customer service at all


    (k) Primary function is interpretation and translation; any other duties assigned will be secondary.

    (l) Will coordinate interpretation and translation in all patient access areas throughout the hospital and clinic area as assigned.

    2. Attends and participates in departmental

    meetings, inservices and quality improvement


    3. Performs other duties as assigned.
