RECRUITMENT: (MDOT PROMOTIONAL) The State Highway Administration Office of Structures (Baltimore City)
is recruiting for a Transportation Design Engineer IV position. This position is open to promotional and permanent (MDOT) employees ONLY who meet the minimum and selective qualifications* listed below. This is a position specific recruitment. The resulting list of eligible candidates will be used to fill this vacancy, and may be used to fill future vacancies in this classification in Office of Structures (Baltimore City).

NATURE OF WORK: To serve as a Professional Engineer Team Leader within the Office of Structures responsible for managing a group of in-house staff in the preparation of the design plans, specifications and construction cost estimates for complex highway structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls and noise barriers for advertisement in public bidding. This job requires a civil engineering education, structural design background, a professional engineer's license, and many years of bridge design experience to ensure safe and reliable structures on our highways. To serve as a PE Team Leader within the Office of Structures responsible for managing consultants in the preparation of the design plans, specifications and construction cost estimates for highway structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls and noise barriers for advertisement in public bidding. This job requires a civil engineering education, structural design background, a professional engineer's license, and many years of bridge experience to ensure safe and reliable structures on our highways. To oversee my Engineer/Technician's development in the preparation of the design plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates for the advertisement and bidding of minor bridge rehabilitation projects. To supervise a design teams performance of their assigned duties to achieve the Teams' objectives. Review and approve timecards and leave requests. Conduct annual performance reviews of the design teams' members. Interview, rate and recommend prospective candidates for engineering and technician positions. To review and comment on highway structure plans prepared by local government agencies and/or private developers. This work often involves building structures such as large culverts and bridges on local county roads.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a Maryland Professional Engineer license, in the appropriate option, is required. Evidence of license must be presented at the time of appointment.

*SELECTIVE QUALIFICATION: Two years of experience in designing bridges and other related highway structures-

NOTES:

1. Registration requirements are established under Title 14, Business Occupations and Professions Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland.

2. Employees of the Maryland Department of Transportation assigned to especially sensitive locations or facilities may be required to obtain and maintain a special security badge.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The preferred candidate will have experience in developing all contract documents (Plans, Specifications and Estimates for Construction). Familiarity with the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges, AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and the OOS Policies & Procedures and Standard Details.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: An applicant's current license as a Professional Engineer in a state with comparable requirements acceptable to the Maryland State Board for Professional Engineers, in the appropriate option for which application is made, will be accepted but the applicant must obtain a Maryland license within twelve (12) months of appointment. Evidence of out of state registration must be presented at time of appointment. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.
