The Transportation Planner is responsible for the day-to-day management of freight orders throughout the supply chain. This position sees that orders are planned with carriers to meet the balance of service and cost requirements, while maintaining a strong relationship between carriers, customers, internal supply chain departments and distribution centers. This position is also responsible for developing logistics and transportation solutions that continue manage costs, improve service, and grow company sales.

This position interacts with:
•Customer Service – to meet customer expectation for delivery of product
•Supply Chain Planning – to ensure inventory is positioned properly and advise of transportation costs associated with product movement
•Distribution Planning – to create shipping schedules that can be executed and act as a liaison between carriers
•Purchasing – to meet deliver expectations of inbound materials and ingredients
•Plant Operations – to ensure need transportation equipment is available for outbound and inbound shipments


1.Customer Focus 1.Achieve and maintain alignment in the value chain between suppliers, Malt-o-Meal and the Customer
2.Serve as the transportation expert regarding the delivery of shipments to and from Malt-o-Meal.
3.Effectively and efficiently manage freight orders by providing appropriate communication to MOM internal customers, MOM freight vendors (carriers) and MOM external customers.

2.Technical / Functional Expertise 1.Transportation Planning

i. Runs transportation routing and scheduling plan on a daily basis for assigned locations, including Customer Deliveries, Plant Transfers, Inbound Materials & Other Freight Movements for the company.

ii. Utilize TMS (Transportation Management System) to manage capacity across carriers, lane assignments, MOM facilities, and customers to maintain service and provide lowest delivered cost.

iii. Utilize TMS to Deliver Low Cost solutions that meet the service needs of the company. Utilize tools and information to consistently deliver shipments on-time while maintaining a competitive cost.

iv. Utilize EDI Technology to communicate and finalize transportation plans and manage reporting of carrier activities regarding shipments.

v. Recommends and implements strategies that expand the use of our TMS system that result in fewer manual processes

vi. Handle Freight Billing Exceptions between MOM, Carriers, Unloading Services and Customers through Freight Payment process.
2.Local Facility Transportation Liaison

i. Support assigned facilities as a liaison to transportation, motor carriers, and freight vendors.

ii. Provide support for motor carriers and freight vendors through the supply chain for shipments from and to assigned facilities.

iii. Manage trailer pools for loading & unloading and ensure all company procedures are being followed by motor carriers and freight vendors for shipments from and to Malt-o-Meal.
3.Provide information and analysis of OTD (On-Time Delivery) results to Transportation Management and Supply Chain stakeholders.
4.Monitor and manage key performance metrics for motor carriers and freight vendors and provide actions to improve upon these key metrics.
5.Manage inbound appointment processes for assigned MOM facilities.

i. Serve as an overall expert for Transportation Management Systems (TMS), EDI Transactions related to transportation, and location scheduling resources

ii. Have a strong understanding and working concept of other internal systems that interact with transportation such as High Jump WMS, COSMOS, Cognos Business Intelligence tools, and any future systems.

iii. Provide feedback regarding system performance and offer solutions to improve systems, procedures, or operating standards.
3.Results 1.Create transportation plan for distribution to execute that meets the requirements of minimizing costs, meeting customer service levels, while managing transportation carrier capacity.
2.Operate within Logistics and Transportation policies and procedures: communicate exceptions and recommendations to Supply Chain stakeholders.
3.Report on key performance metrics, including but not limited to: On-Time Delivery to Buyer Request Date, On-Time Delivery to Carrier Appointment, Cost Per Pallet, Carrier Load Acceptance, and Carrier Trailer Acceptance
4.Identify and quantify opportunities in transportation and logistics to reduce supply chain costs and improve service.

4.Act 1.Generate a transportation plan that meets the service needs or internal and external customers while managing the capacity of transportation vendors and minimizing costs.
2.Develop strong relationships with transportation vendors and internal MOM contacts and be a liaison between those vendors and MOM.
3.Meet with transportation vendor representatives along with department managers to provide feedback on performance, understand their operations, and provide specific details around successes and opportunities for improvement.
4.Proactively establish and implement countermeasures to negative trends.

5.Continuous Improvement 1.Identify and implement process improvements, including MOM Excellence projects, that impact transportation, logistics, and the overall supply chain.
2.Participate in assigned Customer Team meetings to review customer needs and report back to transportation group on progress
3.Provide suggestions for transportation vendor improvements and work with vendors to implement improvements through the MOM system.
4.Document suggested system and process enhancements and work with transportation managers to utilize the ITWR system to begin system changes.

6.Organizational and People Development 1.Development – Develop yourself against the competency profiles for successful leaders at MOM.
2.Provide leadership within the transportation team and cross functionally represent the group as a professional and viable resource for the company to customers, both internally and externally.

7.Other – Perform other projects, functions and services as required or assigned.


Education: 4-year college degree preferred or equivalent experience in Transportation, Warehousing, Integrated logistics and Supply Chain. Professional certification in transportation is desirable.

Experience: Minimum of 5 years industry experience and 3 years experience operating in a supply chain-planning environment in areas of operations, materials management, transportation planning, carrier management or warehousing. Thorough understanding and experience in the use of TMS, WMS, EDI and other Supply Chain software applications. Experience with an ERP and TMS highly desirable. Exposure to Lean Six Sigma principles helpful.

Skills: Broad knowledge of logistics processes and planning systems. Cost control, cost: benefit analysis and the implementation of productivity improvements. Good communication and presentation skills. Demonstrated good business judgment; good understanding of economic principles affecting decisions related to transportation. Good understanding of modes of transportation including international and rail, shipping lanes and material handling. Good initiative. A high level of competence in PC applications and the ability to use technology as a decision support tool. General analytical skills necessary to provide direction and implentation of supply chain initiatives. Skill in prioritizing workloads and stress management. Ability to coordinate and move forward on planned activities in a team environment.
