This is an Entry Level position. This work is related to the installation and maintenance of highway signs within Division Five and when required assist Paint and Signal Crews. Counties included are Durham, Franklin, Granville, Person, Vance, Wake, Warren. The recommended applicant will work primarily in Durham County, but may be required to work Division wide when needed. This position is labor intensive and employee will be required to work in diverse working environment; in all weather conditions, heavy traffic and traffic moving at high speed. Some night and weekend activities may occur. Employee will lift and erect signs and post, perform manual and equipment operational work in the installation and maintenance of roadway signs and perform routine maintenance and safety checks. The qualified individual should be familiar with or be able to learn to use small hand tools or power tools, operate augers, manual, hydraulic and other tools needed for installing signs and pavement marking and the ability to work in a close team environment or independently as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Must be able to lift, carry and hold overhead 50 pounds or more. Operate a motor vehicle safely, Pre-employment drug screening test is required for this position. A release form (ALCDRG-01) and a backgroung (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past 2 years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear will be required. Position requires class 'A' permit to be obtained within 30 working days of employment and class 'A' CDL license to be obtained within 90 days of employment. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requirements vary depending on the section to which the transportation worker is assigned. Entry level: high school; or equivalent. Necessary Special Requirement: ability to obtain N.C. Commercial Driver's License during probation period. Intermediate level: high school plus two years of related experience according to the functional area of assignment, or equivalent. Journey level: high school plus four years of related experience according to the functional area of assignment; or equivalent. Advanced level: high school plus seven years of related experience according to the functional area of assignment, or equivalent.
