Develops, implements and coordinates the Louisville Metro Urban Forestry Management Plan
Monitors the tree canopy status using computer, aerial and geographic information system (GIS) maps to develop and maintain a tree database and for grant reporting
Serves as liaison between department and urban forestry stakeholders in the community
Plans, coordinates and conducts public education and engagement programs in partnership with Metro departments, related agencies and external stakeholders

Examples of Duties:

Assists in budget preparation and monitors and controls expenditures
Prepares reports, correspondence and documents, and completes special projects
Provides technical assistance and instruction in forestry operations
Coordinates and assists with researching and securing grant funding and development of strategic plans to support tree canopy goals
Develops and coordinates the implementation of tree planting initiatives
Coordinates urban tree canopy assessment activities and develops a forestry management plan based on the findings
Provides feedback and guidance to assist Louisville Metro Government in achieving tree-related goals and objectives
Plans and schedules tree preventive maintenance, tree nursery, and chemical treatment activities in collaboration with the Metro arborist and relevant agencies

Coordinates and develops programs to preserve and maintain trees, woodlands and lake areas
Prepares reports, correspondence and documents and completes special projects
Reviews policies and procedures for compliance to standards and regulations, and recommends modifications and improvements to achieve objectives and goals
Develops operational standards based on national best practices
Serves as liaison between relevant Louisville Metro Government agencies and urban forestry stakeholders in the community, including the Tree Advisory Commission
Confers with architects, developers and contractors
Represents Louisville Metro Government at public meetings, events and with the media
Coordinates tree inventory utilizing geographic positioning systems (GPS) for data acquisition
Digitizes, processes, edits and analyzes data using GIS
Performs related work
Meets regular and punctual attendance standards and any special needs of the position as determined by management, including mandatory overtime and performing related work
Spends prolonged periods of time exposed to the elements
Operates office and computer equipment and other technology

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree
Landscape Architecture
Plant Ecology
Related field
Three years of forestry experience, including one year of community forestry program experience

Must provide one's own source of transportation
Must wear safety equipment as mandated by OSHA
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Must be on 24 hour call

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted
Must be a Certified Arborist by the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) or obtain within six months of employment

Skill in written and oral communication
Knowledge of and proficiency with global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) technology
Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with the public and professional colleagues
Ability to assess needs and gather, analyze and present data
