General Summary

Under the direction of a radiologist, performs sonography procedures at a technical level requiring independent documentation of exam.

Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment, with ingenuity and initiative to apply prescribed exam for adequate diagnosis.

Assist the Radiologist during invasive procedures, keeping patient safety at the forefront.

Assumes responsibility for designated area and procedure as required.

Recognizes the purpose of employment is to prioritize the patient as number one, and to put forth the utmost quality as an ultrasound technologist

.

Minimum Education Required

Graduate of approved ARRT program or specific ultrasonography school

Minimum Experience Required

0-6 month experience and registered in one discipline within 1 year of graduation

Licensure/Certification Required

ARRT, ARDMS (if registered), and Indiana Licensure if ARRT

Essential Functions

·

Reviews patient chart results of previous diagnostic studies and records patient’s personal and medical information.

·

Selects appropriate equipment and proper technical factors on an individual patient basis according to specific orders and part of body to be examined.

·

Assists patient in assuming physical position for required exam.

Provides for immobilization as required and protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards.

·

Obtains proper consent from the patient.

Explains test procedure to patient to elicit cooperation and relieve apprehensions about exam.

·

Records images using proper identification information and prepare sonograms for interpreting physician.

Develops film either via laser imager or darkroom, as required.

·

Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination.

Maintains orderliness and cleanliness, including provision for contamination free facility.

·

Reports equipment failure directly to either supervisor or service representative.

·

Instruct personnel as required during orientation.

·

Rotates within the department on varying shifts as required

·

Recognizes abnormal test results and promptly calls attention to either the radiologist or attending physician.

·

Performs required quality control activities including visual safety inspection and machine shut down procedures.

Reports abnormal results/conditions to appropriate personnel.

·

Accurately record procedure details in the RIS system, including tracking jackets and films when necessary.

·

Keeps current regarding development in trends and techniques of sonography by reading technical journals, participating in in-services, and attending seminars.

·

Maintains the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI), the confidentiality of all information, and conducts all aspects of patient care charting, billing, and all operations within the system in a professional and ethical manner in accordancewith Federal, State, and HRHS rules and regulations.
