Virginia Bioinformatics Institute (VBI) at Virginia Tech is currently seeking two undergraduate students for Research Assistant. The successful candidate will be available for employment beginning January 27, 2014 through the end of the spring semester, dependable, possess strong organizational and documentation skills and demonstrate attention to detail.
Responsibilities will include computational modifications to a software system- HALO/Gen. The student will assist the Medical Informatics and Systems Division team in modifying a peptide/ligand search engine using specific computer languages. His/her work will consist of writing code using these languages to add modifications to a data module that will feature unique new components to the HALO/Gen software that will include statistical analysis of peptide array results, and additionally, they will contribute to cosmetic changes to the software so that it is more user-friendly to the needs of the primary user
Requirements for the position would include the following:
1. Able to work 10-20h a week.
2. Must be able to work independently and also in a team setting.
3. Must have working knowledge of or thorough understanding of computer
languages/programs such as Django, Apache, php/html, Python, MySQL, Perl, Lucene.
