The Travelers Bond & Financial Products training program prepares the candidate for a career in underwriting and marketing. Through formal academic training and practical work experience the Underwriter Trainee learns about our underwriting philosophy, business unit products and strategies, principles of negotiation, and relationship building. Learns to produce and underwrite new and renewal business in a market segment including building and maintaining productive relationships with assigned agents/brokers. Learns to interact and collaborate with a team of market segment colleagues.

Underwriting -
Learn the Bond & Financial Products business and how to underwrite - risk assessment, financial analysis and decision making.
Assist in underwriting and pricing accounts in accordance with business strategies. Formulate and communicate recommendations based on learned underwriting skill.
Gain an understanding of key market segment strategies and how to execute them.
Learn how to perform financial analysis (to assess financial component of risk) consistent with market segment standards.
Learn and develop product knowledge.
Understand, embrace and execute Bond & Financial Products guiding principles/best practices. Learn documentation procedures/standards.
Gain an understanding of Bond & Financial Products workflow.
Gain an overall understanding of all Bond & Financial Products market segments and Travelers enterprise business.

Sales Management:
Learn how to develop productive agency/client relationships in support of business objectives through a disciplined sales management approach and training in support of business objectives.
Begin to develop relationships with clients to establish the foundation to interact and effectively deal with account issues as appropriate.
Develop relationships with other Bond and Financial Products staff in the Home Office and in Field Offices.
Attend Regional market segment meetings as part of on the job training.
Develop strong customer service skills including consistency, quick response and knowledge of products.

Strong written and verbal communication skills including influencing, negotiating, listening and interpersonal skills to effectively develop productive internal and external relationships.

Work well independently as well as in a team environment.
Communicate and collaborate with colleagues on team, in Field Offices and in the Home Office.

Decision Making:
Develop the ability to make decisions based on understanding of functions performed during the underwriting process.

Technical Skills:
Learn analytical, financial analysis, products, underwriting, sales management and technology tools.

Possesses a strong work ethic.

The ideal candidate will desire a position that is both analytical and marketing-oriented and possess a bachelor's degree in Risk Management & Insurance, Finance, Business Administration, Economics or equivalent work experience. Candidates with prior related work or intern experience preferred.
