The Underwriting Trainee is responsible for preparing to become an entry-level underwriter by developing a wide range of knowledge and skills pertaining to:
-The insurance industry, the property-casualty concepts and technical training included in various line of insurance
-Office systems and workflows
-How each department of the company supports Underwriting
-Completes required self-study assignments and all training program pre-work within established time frames. Insurance courses and exams would be towards designations such as CIC, AINS, CPCU, etc. The self-study may involve work that takes place in addition to work hours.
Attends any classroom training, study group and business overview sessions and demonstrate proficiency in the learning of critical concepts.
-Trains with the Operations function to learn processing skills (i.e. ImageRight systems training, the fundamentals of rating, book and issue a policy, endorsements, and billing).
-Trains with an Underwriting Assistant learning that role and job responsibilities.
-Actively participates and complete On-the-Job (OTJ) assignments and demonstrate expected level of proficiency against established learning objectives. (See below)
-Training with Claims, Loss Control, Compliance and Premium Audit Functions as assigned
-Assists underwriters in obtaining and evaluating underwriting information to determine whether risks meet underwriting guidelines.
-Ensures compliance with State Regulations in policy rating and issuance.
-Reviews information provided on New Business submissions to determine if account fits our program guidelines.
-Reviews and completes Underwriting Documentation for new business, renewals and endorsements.
-Reviews and gains an understanding of State Regulations, Rating Plans, Policy Forms and Company & Program Guidelines and Procedures to ensure compliance.
-Completes projects as assigned.
-Interacts with our independent agencies and staff within our office in a professional manner.

-Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.)
-College degree or equivalent preferred
Promotion to Associate Underwriter will take place once the Trainee has demonstrated a solid foundation on which to take on further responsibility (approx. 6-12 months dependent on individual performance)
