The University Legal Counsel is responsible for the management and facilitation of all legal issues affecting the University and represents the University in all legal matters; advises the Board of Trustees, the President, the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Human Resources Officer, and other staff and faculty regarding a wide range of issues, including but not limited to, contracts, regulatory compliance, employment and labor law, intellectual property, policies, student conduct, and corporate governance; will collaborate with outside counsel on litigation matters as appropriate; identifies legal issues and provides a full range of legal advice and services in all areas of law authorized by licensure; reviews and advises on local, state, and federal legislation, policies, rules, and regulations; responsible for providing legal representation, advice, counsel, and opinions in all areas of law affecting the University; assists as needed with University responses to external requests for information, reporting, complaints, or citations from external governmental or non-governmental organizations; assists in formulating, drafting, editing, and implementing institutional strategies, policies, and procedures for preventing and addressing legal problems; assists with investigations, grievances, complaints, and conflict resolution as appropriate while monitoring conflicts; provides legal oversight of issues related to higher education, risk management, University contracts, agreements, and related matters; represents the University as appropriate in contact with external legal entities; develops and delivers/presents a variety of educational and training programs for campus leaders/managers/supervisors; and serves on the President’s Executive Management Team, appointed committees, and represents the President’s Office on assigned special projects.
Regionally accredited Juris Doctorate degree with superior academic credentials. Licensed to practice law, and in good standing in the State of California; 10 years active practice of law with legal experience in areas relevant to the practice of higher education law, or 5 years legal experience at an institution of higher education practicing law, including employment law and/or contract law; demonstrated experience and evidence of strong capability in legal research, analysis and reasoning, delivering legal opinions, reviewing institutional policies and procedures and related documents, and making recommendations for improvement. Reviews and prepares contracts and other legal documents while serving as a legal resource on a wide variety of issues related to a complex environment in a higher education setting involving an array of distinct constituencies; proven judgment, verbal and written skills, and ability to work with diverse and scholarly clientele; experience handling and managing college/university legal matters; experience structuring, negotiating, and drafting multifaceted transactions and agreements in a complex environment; experience in public construction law, intellectual property, and general business law; strong management and leadership skills; able to collaborate with a diverse population, and ability to relate well with Trustees, senior administrators, students, faculty, staff, government officials, and external audiences; and ability to travel, in and out of California as requested/required. PC proficient in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
