Primary Purpose:

The Unix System Administrator position is responsible for administering and maintaining enterprise AIX /Linux server hardware, its virtualization and Operating Systems. This includes the installation and support of the physical hosts, their configuration and support of our Operating Systems. This position also requires occasional travel and maintenance of departmental processes and documentation.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for maintaining 24/7 mission critical AIX /Linux systems in a multi-site hosting environment
  • Design, install, configure and maintain enterprise IBM POWER server hardware in multi-site hosting environment
  • Analyze, modify, and enhance operating systems, computer operations procedures, and system security
  • Deploy, support, and administer AIX /Linux server operating systems (AIX v6 and above)
  • Provide technical expertise on AIX /Linux infrastructure projects
  • Learn new hardware, software and technology products in the AIX /Linux environment
  • Execute major platform software and operating system upgrades and maintenance across a multi-LPAR environment
  • Proactively manage system resources to meet service level agreements assuring optimal performance and appropriate additional capacity for peak periods and growth
  • Assists in the development and testing of the Disaster Recovery Plan for servers
  • Provides support to internal customers and application owners
  • 5-10% travel required
  • 24 hour availability when on-call and the willingness to work outside business hours on weekdays and weekends in support of the AIX /Linux environment
  • Strong project delivery and support background working in a large enterprise environments (100+ servers)

Skills/Knowledge Required:
  • Excellent verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to document and communicate complex concepts involving the products supported by the AIX /Linux Team
  • Create shell scripts or programs to automate and/or simplify the administrative procedures
  • Design package builds and utilize tools to deploy, backup operating system images and patches such as NIM and MKSYSB
  • Provide security and patch update analysis, process and deployment
  • Responsible for day to day monitoring, automation and support multiple UNIX Environments Operating System Distributions including, IBM AIX v6 and above, RHEL 5.x/6.x and Suse Linux
  • In depth experience with IBM/AIX, PowerVM/VIOS operating systems
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities

  • Proven ability to identify, analyze, and resolve problems
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a demanding environment

Education and Experience:
  • Associates’ degree required in related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Bachelor of Arts or Science preferred
  • 8+ years overall IT experience
  • 5+ years experience managing IBM Power systems (p6 & p7) servers with virtual LPARS utilizing an HMC, & redundant VIO Server's ( PowerVM) and AIX version 6 and above
  • 5+ years of virtualization experience on IBM Power systems and PowerVM
  • 4+ years of experience with Red Hat Enterprise Level Linux administration
  • Knowledge of UNIX shells and scripting (csh, sh, ksh, sed, awk) and the ability to do minimal debugging and modification those shell scripts
  • Host security (e.g., passwords, uids/gids, SIDs, file permissions, ACLs, file system integrity)
  • Skills and comprehensive understanding of enterprise server disaster recovery. Including IBM server backup image and recovery (MKSYSB)
  • Ability to conduct performance monitoring and (NMON) analysis of server environments diagnosing and resolving complex problems involving servers, EMC SAN and Networking
  • Data centers experience racking, cabling, configuring IBM servers and HMC consoles
  • Comprehensive knowledge of enterprise backup, replication and SAN technologies
  • Willingness to learn new software, hardware, and technologies in the UNIX environment, IBM Tivoli Monitoring and Tivoli Identity Manager
  • Tivoli Storage Manager backup experience a plus
