Description

UNIX Support Engineer in the Information Technology Services (ITS) Customer Service Desk (CSD). Member of a team of technical professionals that will support and manage the UNIX infrastructure.

UNIX Support Engineer will be responsible for introducing change into the UNIX environment and the recovery of UNIX services. Engineer will provide support for escalated problems and service requests for ITS supported UNIX hardware and software, including Sun, RS/6000 and HP systems. The UNIX Support team will act as second level support to the CSD Network Operations Center.

Engineer will participate in continuous process reviews on a regular basis to improve the processes and procedures of the CSD organization. Engineer may be asked to provide training for other CSD staff. Engineer will be encouraged to gain skills and experience, through training and technology certifications, to progress within the CSD and ITS organization. Engineer will also be responsible for systems management of the production UNIX environment, providing service level monitoring, alert thresholds, and plans for addressing potential systems issues in a proactive manner.

Some on-call or off-shift work will be required for problem resolution and implementation of system changes.

Qualifications

*
Minimum 3 years experience in the information technology industry, with minimum 2 years of experience supporting Sun, RS/6000 or Redhat Linux systems.

*
Demonstrated technical problem solving skills, outstanding resourcefulness and a competence for making technical contributions with long-range impact.

*
Excellent working knowledge of UNIX infrastructure, networking, configuration and administration on various major UNIX platforms

Knowledge in any of the following applications a plus:

Veritas Clustering

*
IBM HACMP clustering

*
IBM SP frames using perspectives

*
Solaris

*
Red hat Linux

*
Exadata

*
VMware

*
Veritas failover/Clustering

*
Qmail

*
EAC Access Control

*
Terminal Servers

*
Knowledge of Windows environments, Network Management setup/administration experience, and a thorough understanding of LAN/WAN network configurations is a plus.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and experience using the Microsoft Office applications.

*
Demonstrated ability to quickly analyze, evaluate and resolve technical problems, and the ability to track and document problem resolution steps in a problem management system are essential.

*
Position requires involvement in 24x7 operational problems. Some after hours and weekend work may be required during new technology implementations, systems problem analysis and troubleshooting.

*
Limited travel is required.

Job holder must have experience with designing and executing major software installations and implementing a security system. S/he must be experienced at addressing a variety of technical (hardware, software or application) problems. S/he must also be customer-service oriented, able to build cooperative relationships with people and have strong oral and written communication skills. Job holder must be an experienced problem solver who champions creative solutions and is able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. B.S. or B.A. or equivalent work experience required; advanced degree beneficial; certification beneficial.
