ETS is seeking a talented interaction designer/user experience designer to help design the next generation of interactive simulations used to assess people’s knowledge, skills and abilities across different subjects. The person selected to fill this full-time position will work closely with assessment developers from one of the world’s most respected assessment development organizations.
RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION INCLUDE:
Specifying the usable design of interactive simulations by creating annotated wireframes, storyboards, mockups and prototypes as required
Designing and specifying all possible interactions and system responses, and communicating ideas clearly and completely, so that developers can easily create the simulations from the specifications
Monitoring the work of developers and providing feedback to ensure that the finished simulations adhere to the original intent and vision
Based on the results of pilot tests, making necessary changes to the design and ensuring that developers implement the changes correctly
Providing guidance and feedback to graphic designers to ensure that graphics used in the simulations are appropriate to the tasks and support the usability of the assessment items
Applying instructional design principles, usability best practices and knowledge of human cognitive science to ensure that test takers can concentrate on applying the skills necessary to complete the simulations, and not on figuring out how to operate them.
IN ADDITION, THIS INDIVIDUAL MAY ALSO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
Creating and presenting wireframes, mock-ups, screen flows, information architecture, site maps and prototypes for complex web applications and websites
Writing user-friendly copy for on-screen instructions, headings, button labels, link text and other content elements that affect a user’s experience
Documenting high-level annotations and functional and design specifications
Working closely with writers, graphic designers, web developers, business analysts and software engineers
Reviewing and testing websites and applications to ensure that the designs are implemented according to the wireframes
Analyzing audiences, tasks, user data and web analytics to inform the designs
Conducting heuristic evaluations or usability reviews and providing recommendations for improving a website
Conducting or coordinating usability tests, user walk-through sessions and other ways to test the designs and gather user feedback
Creating design guidelines and sharing best practices.
THIS INDIVIDUAL MUST HAVE:
At least 3 years experience designing interactive simulations is required. Experience designing simulations for assessment or learning is highly preferred.
Bachelor’s degree in human-computer interaction, cognitive science, computer science, graphic design or equivalent work experience
In-depth knowledge of user-centered design techniques and best practices
Strong analytical skills and the ability to understand, design and communicate a cohesive and consistent end-to-end user experience, beyond just the creation of wireframes
The ability to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of specific design elements and articulate why a particular approach is best
Enthusiasm for designing for a wide range of K-12 subject areas, such as science, math, language arts, and social studies, working with subject matter experts
Strong visual design skills, demonstrating attention to layout, composition, typography, color and content/information design
Excellent oral and written communication skills and experience interacting with clients, designers, and developers
Experience conducting user research and/or analyzing user data to inform design decisions
Proficiency in Visio and Microsoft Office
Portfolio of interactive design work, including wireframes, screen flows, and examples of on-screen copy and specifications.
IN ADDITION, THE FOLLOWING SKILLS ARE CONSIDERED A PLUS:
Demonstrated experience creating wireframes, designing user interfaces and defining information architecture and navigation for complex web applications and websites
Usability testing experience and familiarity with Morae or similar usability testing software
Experience creating interactive prototypes (using Axure, iRise, Dreamweaver or similar software) that are suitable for demos, usability testing or adaptation by software engineers
Knowledge of Section 508/accessibility requirements
Experience designing within waterfall and agile development environments
Copywriting and/or editing experience for interactive simulations, websites and web applications
Experience creating and documenting design standards for large organizations or for a wide range of sites
Project management experience
Knowledge of, or experience with, educational testing programs.
