ExactTarget’s User Experience Design Studio (UXDS) is looking for an experienced User Researcher. This researcher, through close collaboration with customers, will be a key member of cross-functional teams working to conceive of and shape useful and usable products for our users. The User Researcher's goals are to serve as the primary user advocate on project teams, to inform and inspire those teams with their thoughtful and thorough application of user research, and to help make the overall user experience as easy, intuitive, and effective as possible.

The ideal candidate will be well versed in a number of research methodologies, be capable of creating long term research plans & protocols, be able to work with Product & Design teams to gather and act on user feedback, and present research findings and design recommendations to project stakeholders. The User Researcher provides a continuous cycle of learning from the problem identification phase, through the implementation and execution phases, to market launch and beyond. Their learnings also help to guide the strategy and designs for upcoming releases and new growth areas.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • End-to-end implementation of qualitative and quantitative user-centered research (e.g., user and task research and analysis, heuristic evaluations, iterative user testing, focus groups, surveys, ethnographic interviews, benchmark usability testing, etc.)
  • Determine and communicate the most appropriate and impactful time(s) and method(s) of research at any given point in a product engineering lifecycle
  • For any given research activity:
o Collaborate with Product to determine business goals and participant criteria
o Identify the best methodology to meet the business and research goals, including flexible approaches to best meet product goals
o Define discussion topics / questions that will yield actionable feedback that is directly relevant to the goals
o Coordinate participant recruitment with Relationship Managers, develop and apply study screener to fill study sessions
o Develop a research plan that outlines the goals & methodology
o Write study protocol that documents the topics / research questions to be covered during sessions
o Collaborate with Design to ensure appropriate test materials are available (e.g., wireframes, clickable mockups, prototype)
o Moderate study sessions
o Analyze research data and compile results that summarize participants’ feedback, identifies themes, and provides actionable product & design recommendations that address both user and business concerns; ensure stakeholders are satisfied with the results and present results to a larger audience as needed
  • Responsible for interpreting user needs and balancing them with business objectives to define a win/win scenario
  • Work with Product to develop and understand target persona(s), user stories, and user flows
  • Work with Interaction Designers to create conceptual designs based on user research and user stories
  • Work with Interaction & Visual Designs to manage creation of annotated wireframes, visual comps, and other final design documentation
  • Work with cross-functional teams to ensure that the project is implemented consistent with the final design
  • Work with Documentation to ensure user assistance is successfully integrated into products (on-screen text, contextual help, etc.)
  • Collaborate with Product to identify usage instrumentation metrics; strive to make use of that data to identify meaningful user behavior trends, usage outliers, and opportunities for targeted follow-up testing
  • Stay current on UX/UCD issues and research
Requirements
  • 3+ years’ experience planning, conducting, and reporting on research to produce actionable results that inform product development
  • Advanced degree or equivalent in HCI, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, or a related field
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary
  • Direct experience with Morae is preferred
  • Comfortable with digital recording technologies and video editing a plus
  • Experience conducting research with remote users a plus
  • Ability to work independently
