Under general supervision, performs work of moderate to considerable difficulty in operating a water or wastewater treatment plant in accordance with applicable laws, ordinances and regulations.Supervision: • Exercised: Classification typically does not supervise.• Received: Typically reports to the Utility Operations Supervisor.• Note: Other reporting relationships may applyExample of Duties:The Department of Public Utilities – Division of Wastewater is seeking to hire 2 Utility Operators to help man the City’s wastewater treatment plant which consist of the 50 MG Shockoe retention Basin and Diversion Structure as well as the 45 MGD design flow Wastewater Treatment Facility as needed . The selected candidates duties will include but are not limited to, Monitoring plant operations for assurance of quality waste treatment, Performing repairs and maintenance tasks as assigned ( pumps, gearboxes, conveyors and other relative Wastewater equipment ) ; Troubleshooting and inspecting work equipment for quality performance of the treatment process at proficient levels; Observe and document variations in operating conditions to determine processing requirements; Record operational data, read interpret & adjust gauges, meters and control panels. Operate centrifuges and polymer pumps.Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses:The Utilities Operator is a Broadbanding position ranging from Zone 1 to 5. The minimum zone requirements are: High School diploma/GED experience in wastewater treatment operations or an equivalent combination of training and experience is a plus but not mandatory.

The selected candidate will be placed in an appropriate pay zone based on level of Wastewater Treatment Professional License.Zone 1-5High school graduation or GED and some experience in the performance of utilities operation tasks.An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification.Zone 2 Certification:Level 4 Water or Wastewater Operator license.Zone 3 Certification:Level 3 Water or Wastewater Operator license.Zone 4 Certification:Level 2 Water or Wastewater Operator license.Zone 5 Certification:Level 1 Water or Wastewater Operator license.Americans with Disabilities Act Requirements:PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS: Physical and dexterity refers to the requirement for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.Requires medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping and lifting and involves exerting between 40 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis.ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Environmental hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.The job risks exposure to no known environmental hazards.SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Sensory ability refers to hearing, sight, touch, taste, and smell required by the job.The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception, field of vision, hearing and speaking.ADA COMPLIANCEThe City of Richmond, Virginia is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
