Incumbent performs manual work in the operation of coal and bio-fuel boilers and auxiliary equipment for steam generation at the University Heating Plant. This position is considered an essential personnel position.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Lubricates pumps, checks water levels and steam pressure to assure safe and constant steam; adds chemicals to water as directed; fires boilers; tests boiler water; removes ashes, blows down boilers, cleans flues, and lubricates equipment according to prescribed schedule on assigned shift.
Assists in the operation of electric generators, reads meters and records readings, cleans equipment, and performs preventive maintenance, following prescribed procedures.
Identifies and monitors changes that indicate impending difficulties in steam generation.
Assists Utility Plant Operator 2's in the maintenance and repair of plant equipment.
Operates electric motor driven fans, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment.
Unloads coal and bio-fuel (wood) trucks, as needed, and clean/sweep coal dock.
Cleans all components of boilers and generating rooms and other related general housekeeping duties in a coal and bio-fuel fired steam generating plant on a regular basis.
May function as a lead worker over laborers, tradesman helpers, or new probationary employees in the performance of unskilled tasks by distributing and interpreting work assignments, providing assistance, conducting on-the-job training, and reviewing the work for adherence to standards.
Participates in training and education activities, as requested.
Practices safety measures to prevent accidents and injuries, and to ensure compliance with applicable regulations.

Knowledge of the operation of steam generating boilers and related equipment.
Knowledge of utility plant safety procedures.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read gauges and maintain steam production and fuel consumption records.
Ability to perform manual labor and to lift and carry a minimum of 80 pounds and to work in areas of relatively high temperatures.
Minimum Experience and Training:
One year as a Utility Plant Helper; or one year of comparable boiler plant experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
Necessary Special Requirement:
Must be physically able to wear a full-face respirator as required for certain duties. Determination of ability to meet this requirement is determined by an approved occupational physician.
Applicants will be rated on the following criteria:
1) Demonstrated mechanical background/experience and ability to perform mechanical repairs
2) Experience operating industrial boilers and high pressure steam systems
3) Ability to maintain related records in an industrial setting
4) Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights with personal protective equipment in place
5) Ability to perform boiler water testing and treatment
Finalist must communicate well and successfully complete an interview.
