Position Code: 13-PD-103
Reports To: Product Development & Operations
Department: Hardware & Systems
Complete Genomics was founded in 2006 by Dr. Clifford A. Reid and Dr. Radoje T. Drmanac, who shared a vision to provide academic and biopharmaceutical researchers with whole human genomic data and analysis at an unprecedented quality, cost and scale without requiring researchers to invest in in-house sequencing instruments, high-performance computing resources and specialized personnel. Complete Genomics makes human genome sequencing, data analysis and management accessible for all scientific and medical researchers to conduct large-scale genomic research studies. It is through these studies that researchers understand the genetic basis of disease and gain insight into how we might prevent, diagnose and treat genetic diseases.
Complete Genomics was initially funded by various venture capital groups, eventually going public on the Nasdaq in 2010. In September 2012, the company announced that it had entered into an agreement to merge with BGI-Shenzhen, a privately-held company headquartered in Shenzhen, China and a recognized world leader in genome sequencing. That merger was completed in March 2013.
The company develops products for high speed, high volume DNA sequencing. Company core technology includes molecular biology, large scale enterprise computing, high speed networking, and hardware to manage automated biological sample preparation, rapid wet chemical processing, and high density, low distortion optical measurements.
As the VP of Engineering, you will manage and coordinate several development groups, including Optical Imaging, Fluidics, Nano-lithography, System Simulation, and Biochemical Process Automation. You will oversee, from concept through deployment, the development of complex, high up-time automated instruments that integrate multi-step wet chemical processing, robotics, sub-micron resolution multi-wavelength optical scanning, and very high volume data processing and output. Development efforts involve coordination of multi-disciplinary internal teams with large scale external contract developers and manufacturers. You will coordinate project definition, prioritization, and administration with direct reports, senior leaders in biochemistry and computation, and company senior management.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Hands-on experience with system engineering, design, and production of complex electro-mecho-optical systems, and mechanical systems using fluids and pneumatics.
- 15+ years of experience in design, manufacture, and deployment of complex electro-opto-mechanical systems, preferably including active fluidic systems.
- 10+ years of experience leading, staffing, and administering multi-disciplinary teams.
- 15+ years of experience with Project and/or Program management.
- 10+ years of experience at a Director or 5+ Years at VP level or above, or equivalent experience.
- Travel at 10% level
- M/S or M/Eng in Physics, Optics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Fluidics, or related field. Ph.D. Preferred.
