This position is in the Medical Consultation Unit of the Communicable Disease Branch. The primary purpose of this position is to assist local health departments and health care providers statewide with investigation of vaccine-preventable disease (VPD) cases and implementation of appropriate public health prevention and control measures. The incumbent will also ensure that appropriate clinical specimens are tested and relevant epidemiologic information is collected for all reportable VPDs, including diphtheria, measles, mumps, pertussis, polio, rubella, and tetanus. The person in this position must function independently and provide leadership in development and management of policies for statewide VPD investigation and response. Specific duties include providingconsultation to local health departments, physicians, nurses and other health care providers statewide regarding clinical, diagnostic, and control measures for VPDs and providing training and guidance to local health department staff and other statewide partners regarding VPD reporting, investigation and control. The incumbent will also provide direct support to local health departments during VPD outbreaks.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
The employee must have experience working with vaccine-preventable diseases in a clinical or public health capacity and the ability to analyze and interpret clinical, laboratory and epidemiologic data in order to recommend appropriate control measures. The employee must also have an in-depth knowledge of epidemiology, including surveillance techniques, outbreak investigation, data analysis, statistical methods, and study design. The person in this position should have advanced knowledge of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations for control of VPDs as well as NC general statutes and NC administrative code rules pertaining to immunizations and communicable disease surveillance. Experience with working with databases and familiarity with Microsoft Excel are necessary. Exceptional communication skills (oral and written) and the ability to prepare and deliver presentations on VPD-related topics to lay and professional audience are essential.A valid NC driver license is required. Management Prefers: Basic knowledge of influenza epidemiology.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
If no one meets the advanced skill set management may consider someone who is at a journey level.

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and two years of experience in the area of specialization.
