This position reports to the Chief of Animal Care and Protective Services. The primary purpose of this position is to diagnose, administer medical treatments, perform the surgeries, monitor the health and care of animals housed at the shelter, and act in the capacity of an expert witness in court cases.
Examples of Work:
- Performs spay/neuter and alternative surgeries.
- Prescribes and performs treatment, therapy, medication, vaccination and other medical care.
- Advises the Chief and other managers in areas of veterinary medicine.
- Performs and/or interprets results from necropsies for criminal cases; and testifies to same as needed.
- Researches medical literature to develop and review standard operating procedures.
Open Requirements/Supplemental Information:
The Veterinarian shall be a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and must have at least two years of professional experience. DEA License is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment. Must be licensed by the State of Florida to practice veterinary medicine prior to appointment and maintain said license during employment with the City of Jacksonville.
In accordance with the City of Jacksonville Ordinance 116.910, effective July 1, 2012, any person who is hired or appointed by the City of Jacksonville and does not reside within Duval County at the time of hire, will have six (6) months to establish permanent residency within the boundaries of Duval County. Failure to establish permanent residency within six (6) months shall constitute resignation from employment. Effective July 1, 2012, any person who is hired or appointed by the City of Jacksonville and does reside within Duval County at the time of hire, but subsequently moves his/her permanent residence outside the boundaries of Duval County, shall constitute resignation from employment.
