Be of service to your community by applying for this full time position. This position is responsible for the health management of all animals impounded at the county animal care & control shelters.
There is (1) one full time opening working at The St, Louis County Animal Shelter located 10521 Baur Blvd, St. Louis MO 63132, Missouri.
We are an open admission facility serving all of St. Louis County. Our shelter takes in over 8000 animals per year, typically housing 200-300 at any one time. We have a new state-of-the-art building, were awarded the “Outstanding Animal Shelter Award” for 2012 and are also now a “Purina One-Hope Shelter”. There are two full time veterinarians and two veterinary technicians. We have separate veterinary treatment area and surgery suite as well as a digital x-ray machine.
Primary responsibilities include health and well being of all sheltered animals, including evaluation, treatment, sterilization, forensics and euthanasia
There are two Veterinary Technicians that will be directly supervised by the person holding this position. They will have to coordinate the activities of the subordinates, assign and review subordinates’ work, approve subordinates time off, and prepare and sign performance appraisals with the assistance of the senior veterinarian.
This position reports directly to the Program Manager and works together with the two shelter supervisors and senior veterinarian on operational and programmatic needs.
Examples of Duties:
Evaluate or assign evaluation of all animals in the shelters upon arrival for medical or behavioral treatment as needed.
Determine nature of disease or injury in animals and provide emergency care as needed.
Perform euthanization procedures as required
Be on-call for emergency situations
Sterilization of all animals available for adoption or rescue.
Perform autopsies on animals to determine cause of death and oversee investigations to control and prevent communicable diseases between animals and humans
Maintain and monitor controlled drug supply as required by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)
Prepare reports and maintains veterinary records and files for compliance with state statues and policies
Perform other duties as required or assigned
Requires licensure as a Veterinarian with the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board and two years of related experience. Must possess good surgical skills.
SELECTION AND APPOINTMENT : A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recency and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.
The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade.
A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment.
The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Director of the Department who will make the final decision.
All applicants conditionally offered a permanent part-time, full-time; term or on-call position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory. The cost of screening will be borne by the County.
