The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Veterinarian for its Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch (CABBR). The main responsibilities of this position are to provide daily veterinary care, as needed, to rescued animals. Other duties include, but are not limited to: designing and implementing a preventative veterinary care program; conducting routine examinations of individual animals to identify existing and potential medical issues; conducting routine hematological analyses and fecal exams to assess the health of individual animals, identifying potential medical problems, and to assess the efficacy of worming program; teaching sanctuary staff basic veterinary care procedures and techniques; designing, supervising, renovating and equipping veterinary care facility; observing ranch animals daily for signs of disease or injury; performing routine surgeries as needed; assisting in improving animal facilities; interfacing with local and university veterinarians to ensure that ranch animals are receiving the best possible care; working closely with CABBR Director to ensure optimal health and quality of life for all CABBR animals; working with other HSUS staff to develop practical veterinary programs to address important animal welfare issues; advising and updating HSUS management on veterinary programs and important animal medical issues. A D.V.M. or V.M.D. degree from an accredited school of veterinary medicine required along with extensive experience in routine veterinary surgery, medicine, experience in equine management including hoof, dental, and geriatric care. Candidate must hold a current veterinary license in the state of Texas, or able to secure one; have knowledge and experience diagnosing and treating a variety of animal diseases and injuries, particularly in equines, porcines, bovines and preferably, in exotic animals and primates; the ability to work independently within a team environment; a flexible schedule for monitoring recovery as needed and be on call for center emergencies.
