Medical Duties

In-patient medical care

give medications

assist or perform treatments

diagnostics and monitoring

place IV catheters

draw blood

run lab tests

administer IV fluids

cleaning, feeding, and walking patients as needed.

Anesthesia

Induction, maintenance, monitoring, and recovery of patients,

Clean and maintain anesthesia equipment

Surgery

Surgical preparation

Doctor assistance

Clean, sterilize, and maintain all surgical instruments and/or equipment

Dentistry

Provide patient dental care

Ultrasonic cleaning and polishing

Assist doctor with dental surgery

Take dental radiographs

Radiology (including dental imaging)

Positioning patients and taking radiographs

Submitting for consults

Expose and develop radiographs

Laboratory duties

Collecting, preparing, and running or submitting samples for requested tests

Reading and recording results when indicated (stool samples, urine analysis, ear cytology etc) when requested by doctor

Technician appointments

Blood draws for therapeutic monitoring / screening tests

Bandage changes

Post-op checks

Suture removals

Nail trims

Medications

Preparing prescriptions

Administering medications

Medication refills

Client Services

Preparing invoices, discharge instructions, and client information packs

Client communication

Give patient updates

Discharge instructions

Provide followup for certain hospital patients

Ability to handle angry or grieving clients with a calm, compassionate, and reassuring manner

Client medical demonstrations / education

Clinic technician

Assisting doctor with outpatient appointments

Preparing, restocking, and cleaning exam room

Check patients in and out

Take history and vitals

Input proper medical abbreviations and terminology into patient medical record

Ensure a smooth and timely flow of outpatient appointments from the check-in to the discharge

Assist with reception and front desk duties as needed

Answering phones

Booking appointments

Market all services and products offered by the practice

Admit / discharge patients

Miscellaneous

Assist with on-call pager

Field calls

Answer to best of ability medical questions

Contact on-call veterinarian

Be available to assist on-call veterinarian on site

Assist in training and mentoring new team members

Possibly manage boarding kennels

Possibly manage animal control

Assist with inventory control

Ordering, unpacking, restocking drug & medical supplies

Inventory management

Hospital cleaning as needed

Laundry

Emptying garbage cans

Organizing inventory shelves

Shovel sidewalks and salt (seasonal)

Maintain a professional appearance

Wearing clean and pressed uniforms

Wearing clean and intact tennis shoes

Practice proper hygiene

Continuing education

Participate in off site continuing education

Maintain education through journals

Shift Times

Monday: 2:00 pm-10:00 pm

Tuesday: 2:00 pm-10:00 pm

Wednesday: 1:00 pm-7:00 pm

Thursday: 2:00-10:00 pm

Friday: 1:00-7:00 pm

Saturday: 8:00 am-1:00 pm

Team members will have the opportunity to earn overtime pay for hours worked over 40 per week, which would be approved by a supervisor

Full time employees will be eligible for health, dental, and supplemental benefits. Part time positions are available

Must be punctual and prepared to work at the start of each scheduled shift

Other Job Requirements

Education Requirements

A certificate in veterinary technology (CVT) or equivalent is required. The inquiring employee may also apply if they are in the process of achieving their certification. An internship in the small animal veterinary field, as well as passing state and national boards are required. Must have at least 1 year of experience working with animals.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to:

Bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, and listen

May be required to walk or stand for long periods of time

Will use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel

Will reach with hands and arms.

The employee is often required to lift and carry animals or materials weighing fifty pounds or more

Handle dogs weighing up to 150 lbs.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to:

Hazards associated with aggressive patients

Hazards associated with infected animals and controlled substances

Exposure to unpleasant odors and noises

Exposure to bites, scratches and animal wastes

Possible exposure to contagious diseases

Safety Standards

The veterinary technician should be familiar and obtain annual training on safety techniques.

Must follow OSHA regulations

Be able to find Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) quickly

Be familiar with infectious diseases, including their prevention and steps to reduce or eliminate transmission

Know the most common zoonotic diseases

Supervision Requirements

Veterinary technicians employed at the Brighton Veterinary Hospital are under the direct guidance and supervision of the doctor(s), practice manager, and Head technician. Incumbents of this position are required to:

Assist the practitioners to the fullest possible extent

Help improve the quality of care given to the patients of the Brighton Veterinary Hospital

To aid the practitioners in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work and administrative detail

Communication Skills

These are skills that the veterinary technician will need to utilize on a daily basis while working with clients, patients, and team members:

Active reading and comprehension

Time management and organizational skills

Use of professional language and grammar

Ability to use a computer (PC and/or Mac) and other technology for record keeping and communication

Must have a natural love for animals
