The VP Engineering reports directly to the President and acts as a business partner in the company, participates in all company strategic and tactical planning and has direct responsibility for engineering functions of the company. Accountabilities: The VP, Engineering will contribute at the board level in all aspects of the business. Specific tasks include but are not limited to:
Participate as a senior management team member responsible for reviewing engineering project progress against forecasted objectives, specifications, timelines and budget.
Provide strategic planning direction and follow up to ensure tactical execution of engineering R&D projects and manufacturing support activities.
Manage and provide technical direction to project teams developing new product design features, specifications and quality requirements.
Provide overall direction and support to engineering department members and insure timely and accurate completion of all work assignments.
Establish and insure adherence to engineering department policies, procedures and budget.
Determine program objectives and requirements and develop standards and guidelines for all engineering activities.
Continually prioritize and provide follow up on all engineering projects and assignments; effectively motivate, develop and evaluate department employees.
Hire, develop, coach and lead a top notch engineering team. All team members must be “A” players in their respective roles. Must have a track record of being a member of an executive team; you understand how to achieve corporate strategies; you know how to represent the company to customers; you have put together great recruiting and retention programs; and you have a proven track record leading product development, engineering and technical sales.

Responsibilities
Hire and direct staff of group members and managers, acquire necessary resources and plan to meet scheduled commitments.
Manage and direct a staff of highly motivated engineers and designers, possessing excellent managerial skills to lead a team of professionals.
Ensure that reviews are conducted on time and that employees receive fair compensation, recognition for their work, and suggestions for the advancement of their careers.
Conduct regular meetings with the engineering staff to review projects, quotes, direction, and challenges within the department. Implement and review formal processes to support the product development process
Ensure the optimal application of technology and engineering resources to meet customer requirements, per product and/or marketing requirements documents.
Ensure that work scope is fully and correctly defined, documented, and executed on schedule.
Review, update, and create ISO procedures to standardize and streamline engineering processes to higher efficiency levels.
Requirements
Engineering leadership experience for companies or division of at least $150M
Experience reporting to a non-finance manager (GM or President) is REQUIRED
A minimum of 5 years of experience in a manufacturing environment is REQUIRED
Experience leading multidisciplinary product development teams in geographically dispersed locations in REQUIRED
Experience materially participating in technology licensing for product development purposes
Active participation/leadership role in the turnaround of a company or business unit
Experience as a material participant in at least one successful acquisition or spin-off.
Experience working internationally – leading and managing teams in international locations – some direct reports and some indirect reports
Experience developing annual budget
BS/BA degree with concentration in Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic or Optics related engineering or Physics or equivalent – REQUIRED
An advanced degree in a technical discipline is strongly preferred – an MBA would be a plus
Fundamental understanding of the design, test and analysis tools relevant to the function, to include CAD, FEA, FMEA, DFA, etc.
Training and experience in the use of MS Project and in project management techniques. Personal Characteristics
