Summary of Position Responsibilities

MetLife has recently implemented a market-focused operating structure and growth strategy in the Group, Voluntary and Worksite Benefits organization. This growth strategy and the changes in the operating model itself have presented a need for careful strategic planning across each market segment and across each functional area in the organization. This position will have responsibility for supporting the Executive Vice President in driving this growth strategy by facilitating the strategic planning process, by establishing success metrics that are tied to the strategy, by facilitating a process to prioritize key initiatives required to deliver on the strategy and by aligning key functions where dependency on delivery exists (business units, functional areas, technology planning, talent planning and communications).
Dimensions of Position

Responsible for facilitating strategic planning process

Drive alignment across the GVWB executive leadership and key functional partners on strategic priorities as related to financial targets, market growth initiatives, organizational effectiveness and critical operational efficiencies

Segment lead for non-organic growth objectives (M&A)

Segment lead for non-traditional partnerships

The candidate will be responsible for the following:
Translate and manage $5B three-year organizational growth aspiration into a set of specific 2013 and 2014 strategic initiatives, with business and implementation plans in alignment with each market segment

Ensure results delivery through the identification, prioritization, and implementation of projects that meet strategic, enterprise, market, and customer demands; serve as a SWOT resource for issues resolution and/or execution

Effectively facilitate development of financial plans associated with strategic initiatives in collaboration with GVWB Finance

Supervise research and package information on MetLife’s GVWB competitors, environmental forces and industry trends that will shape the group and voluntary benefits marketplace.

Identify targets and organize facts into clear recommendations to facilitate the development of M&A valuation, benchmark comparisons, and due-diligence analysis

Partner with Communications leader regarding strategic plans and develop initiatives to disseminate information to all business partners.

Work with associates from across the organization on strategic projects as needed. Influence and negotiate without formal direct authority, consultative in approach.

Ability to support business initiatives while working with senior executives and other stakeholders to deliver comprehensive and insightful analyses used to produce recommendations aligned with GVWB strategy

Lead and work on cross-functional teams as needed, raising ideas/issues that may impact the GVWB strategy. Escalate and put forward recommendations to senior leaders that will have the greatest impact on the company as a whole.

Advisor to EVP across a range of tactical and strategic topics

Competencies/Skills/Experience Required

10-15 years of M&A/strategy/project management/business consulting experience with either a top tier insurance company, bank, consulting firm or a complex global organization (preferably withinfinancial services)

Experience in a business to business (B2B) operating model

Demonstrate distinctive problem solving and analytical skills (micro- and macroeconomics, finance and advanced problem solving)

Experience in executing strategy initiatives, creating business cases, initiative planning and project management

Knowledge of the insurance and employee benefits markets, competitors, industry trends, products and distribution methods, with a focus on high-priority growth markets.

Show business maturity, have strong executive presence and possess advanced written and verbal communication skills

Experience in driving to synthesis and developing recommendations; high degree of comfort with ambiguity

Exhibit strong collaboration skills and ability to engage across multiple functions, business units and geographies

Be a self-starter, with the ability to work on multiple projects and handle multiple issues simultaneously – organized and detail oriented

Ability to manage consensus/conflict at various levels and cultivate strategic internal relationships across a highly matrixed organization.

Strategic thinker with strong execution capabilities and mindset

Ability to influence and negotiate without formal direct authority, consultative in approach; diplomatic.

Strong team builder, inclusive by nature

Possess a global mindset

MBA from a top ranked institution

Prior insurance experience highly preferred

Willingness and ability to travel
