DC Central Kitchen (DCCK) seeks a Volunteer Coordinato r to join our dynamic team and support our mission. Our mission is to use food as a tool to: strengthen bodies by using existing resources to meet hunger and nutritional needs in our community; empower minds by providing leadership and service learning opportunities. The DCCK is a national leader in the fields of hunger relief, workforce development, and social enterprise, due in large part to our strategic work with more than 14,000 volunteers each year.

The Volunteer Coordinator will be instrumental and in a hands-on leadership role providing meaningful and transformational service opportunities, cultivating and sustaining community partnerships, and supporting the continued development of DC Central Kitchen. Facilitate volunteer activities in daily food production and more importantly, to help achieve the larger goals of breaking down sterotypes of hunger and homelessness by engaing new partner in DCCK's work. Exposing community members to staff, students and graduates while expanding new partners in DCCK's reach in the global community.


Promote new and continued volunteer partnerships with groups from corporate, civic, religious and educational institutions by performing community outreach and attending volunteer recruitment events. Create and maintain a calendar of activities and events that provide a variety of volunteer/student and donor centered experiences. Continually assess needs in order to effectively place, utilize and redirect volunteers. High visibility and contact with volunteers, students, community liaisons, internal and external partners, donors and departmental staff. Effectively use a suite of online tools and software to manage, register, and track volunteer hours and provide full accounting of court-ordered community service hours. Craft, implement and manage a tracking, recognition, and cultivation program for repeat volunteers (a 100-hours club, or 100,000 meals club, etc.) Actively participate in DCCK’s external relations, including communications, marketing, content curating, social media outreach, and donor identification cultivation.

Develop objectives and strategies, establish long-range objectives and specify the strategies and actions to achieve them.

Evaluate information to determine compliance with District and Federal standards, processes, policies and regulations.

Assist site staff in actively identifying volunteer projects through needs assessment and ongoing communication with stakeholders and partners.

Establish and regularly update volunteer schedule and list of events using our online volunteer management tools.

Provide exemplary customer service to volunteers, and the general public relative to inquiries, requests, and comments regarding DCCK programs and services as well as other aspects of hunger relief in an accurate and timely manner.

Participate in conferences, seminars, and training sessions to keep abreast of developments in the field and integrate relevant information into volunteer program.

Collect, manage, disseminate and productively use feedback from all parties involved in volunteer activities, including volunteers, partnering stakeholders, staff, and community members through written reports, testimonials, and verbal comments.

Share feedback with site staff to acknowledge strengths, successes and to make improvements for future volunteer activities.

Compose, generate varied correspondence and official documents including but not limited to: letters, memoranda, weekly staff reports, newsletters, variance reports, purchase orders, expense requests, letters of agreement, contracts, address and email lists, and specialized reports

Considerable knowledge of anf the ability to work with diverse groups and in a diverse workplace.

The Volunteer Coordinator will be tasked with responsibilities which require the incumbent to be organized, follow systematic methods of performing tasks and demonstrate excellent time management skills.

Confident, articulate, self-starter comfortable working independently and collaboratively with a team; ability to make critical decisions while adhering to organizational policies, procedures and company goals.

Advanced organizational skills with the ability to work independently on multiple detail oriented projects with minimal supervision is required.

Proven ability to train and motivate volunteers and team members to provide cutting edge, customer service focused activity programming.

Demonstrated experience and/or training with website, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter account development and maintenance is essential.

Willingness to learn new software and database programs is elemental including VolunteerHub, eTapestry and Community Tech Knowledge.

Qualifications/education requirements:
Bachelor’s degree required. Requirement may be waived with 3 to 5 years of demonstrated related experience.

Minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible work experience in volunteer leadership, project management, communication, and/or event planning is required.

Advanced knowledge of and proficiency with the Microsoft software package including but not limited to; Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is required.

Understanding and knowledge of non-profit administration, hunger relief, empowering leaders, developing food systems, and/or helping communities to help themselves is highly desirable.

Experience recruiting, training, managing, and supporting groups of individuals committed to addressing community needs through service projects.

Excellent writting and communication and interpersonal skills with documented public speaking experience.

Ability to stay flexible and keep a sense of humor while working in a fast paced environment.

Desire to be part of a large nonprofit whose mission is to "combat hunger and create opportunity".

Currebt driver's license and excellent driving record desired.
