Performs responsible skilled work in assisting with the duties required for operation and maintenance of the city’s water treatment facilities, pumping systems and storage tanks; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a senior shift operator. Operator III may supervise subordinate operators.
Essential Job Functions*:
Ability to stand for extended periods of time and to climb and work at elevations up to 25 ft. above ground; Ability to work under adverse weather conditions; Ability to lift up to 100 lbs.; Ability to withstand chemicals, various fumes and other atmospheric conditions associated with wastewater treatment. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for use of measuring devices, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise, hazards. Worker may be required to wear a self contained breathing apparatus. Worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and required to wear specialized protective equipment.
Observes, assists, or performs routine duties (assigned tasks depends on position) on shift operation of water treatment plant to help operate the plant efficiently in compliance with established standards and procedures; Assists with water treatment lab testing functions and preparation of reports/records to verify water treatment performance functions and document quality of treated water and plant operations; Assists in the monitoring of water treatment processes and under guidance and direction of senior operator on shift, makes adjustments in chemical dosages and equipment operations as changing conditions require to keep processes functioning at top efficiency; Assists in start up and operation of the industrial water treatment plant in accordance with procedures and standards; Assists with inspection of water tanks to include climbing tanks and booster pumping stations to verify proper operation and assists with corrective actions as required to maintain safe efficient operations in compliance with required standards and procedures; Help collect for water quality analysis water samples from designated system for testing to verify that the water in the system meets established quality standards and is safe for human consumption; Reports to work on assigned duty schedule; Performs other reasonable duties as assigned.
Performs building maintenance and custodial duties; Cuts grass at plant, around stations and tanks. Assists maintenance staff with equipment maintenance as needed.

General to thorough knowledge of water treatment and pumping equipment, processes and equipment maintenance; Ability to take accurate operating equipment readings; Ability to make arithmetical and algebraic calculations; Ability to prepare accurate records and reports; Ability to use computers to input data and generate operating reports; Required to progress through all levels of Water Plant Treatment Operators; Ability to understand and execute technical instructions.
Special License and Certificates:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid (Trainee & Operator I) - Class III Waterworks Operator's license within 24 months of employment; (Operator II) - Class II Waterworks Operator's license with 24 months of employment; (Operator III) - Class I Waterworks Operator's license; Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Pesticide license within 6 months of employment; Possession of a valid drivers license.
