This position serves as a wildlife biologist with responsibility for planning, administering, and providing professional expertise in wildlife programs and provides expertise and assistance in wildlife management.

Provides guidance for the development and implementation of wildlife management plans and/or habitat management plans. Participates in management investigations and assessments necessary for the protection, restoration, and enhancement of wildlife resources and recommends habitat protection or improvement. Prepares project work plans and coordinates project work with other Unit personnel. Monitors wildlife program activities and provides leadership in inventories and evaluation of habitat conditions and needs.
Reviews environmental analysis reports to determine adequacy of coordination of wildlife needs. Analyzes and determines the effects of management activities on wildlife resources and prepares environmental assessments to document findings. Plans and conducts studies, projects, and/or surveys including cost/benefit analyses, methods to be used, timing, coordination with other organizations or agencies, follow-up investigations and evaluations.

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for all positions at the GS-5 grade level and above.
Bachelor's Degree: biological science that included at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research courses in the field of wildlife biology; and at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
Combination of education and experience -- equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), with at least 9 semester hours in wildlife subjects, 12 semester hours in zoology, and 9 semester hours in botany or related plant science, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Bachelor's Degree with major in wildlife biology, zoology, or botany that included at least 30 semester hours of course work in biological science and 15 semester hours in the physical, mathematical, and earth sciences. This course work must have included:
At least 9 semester hours of training applicable to wildlife biology in such subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, principles of population dynamics, or related course work in the field of wildlife biology; and
At least 12 semester hours in zoological subjects such as invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy of the vertebrates, embryology, animal physiology, entomology, herpetology, parasitology, and genetics; and
At least 9 semester hours in the field of botany and related plant science; and
At least 15 semester hours of training in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, soils, and/or geology.
In addition to the basic requirements, the following additional education and/or experience are qualifying. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the specialized experience requirements. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
GS-9: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree (coursework directly related to the position being filled); one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level; and/or a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. Examples of specialized experience are: Served as an advanced trainee specializing in wildlife biology and performed common qualitative and quantitative analyses of wildlife resources; conducted surveys and drafted tentative professional opinions to assist in determining wildlife resource needs and remedies; and/or assisted in carrying out a range of analytical/scientific assignments in the wildlife biology profession that included researching and analyzing data, issues, and information that support wildlife project recommendations.
GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree (coursework directly related to position being filled); one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level; and/or a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience. Examples of specialized experience are: Provided input in the wildlife management program by gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to determine environmental conditions, characteristics, and values, and the interrelationship of wildlife resources with other resources; analyzed data and recommended solutions to problems involving a limited section of wildlife resources issues, e.g., interpreted the effect and impact of changes on wildlife habitat as a result of specific resource activities; and/or provided input in the preparation, maintenance, and revision of functional wildlife plans that involved interpretation of data obtained from studies and field surveys.
