The Strategic Education Research Partnership (SERP) Institute was founded seven years ago to serve as a true partnership between large urban districts and research institutions to work on urgent challenges identified by schools and districts. Word Generation, a cross-content academic language program, came out of the collaboration between the Boston Public Schools and SERP (wordgeneration.org) as a response to the pressing issue of middle school students struggling with reading comprehension because of limited vocabularies. SERP was recently awarded a multi-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education to modify the existing Word Generation program for the elementary and middle grades (4th-8th) with discussion and debate as the drivers for deepening reading comprehension; this modified program will be known as Word Generation- Enhanced (WG-E).

This grant, “Catalyzing Comprehension through Debate and Discussion (CCDD)” involves partnerships with multiple school districts, and the implementation and evaluation of the modified curricula. We are seeking a candidate who has a background in literacy, research, and school-based coaching and professional development. The WG Coach will work in schools in the greater Boston area and Cape Cod.The candidate will provide the following: Work collaboratively with teachers, school administrators, the SERP team, and researchers involved in the project. Professional development, including: •Design and deliver regular professional development to participating teachers on such topics as: oaccountable talkoacademic language development odebate and discussion as drivers for improving reading comprehension and writing•Assist in design and facilitation of a summer institute for participating teachersCoaching•Schedule and hold informal teacher meeting groups by grade level and/or subject in an effort to develop a learning community•Observe and support co-teaching and/or modeling of instruction in WG and WG-E classrooms with regular feedback to teachers•Support teachers and teaching teams to develop and meet curriculum implementation and instruction modification goals•Support teachers understanding and use of data to inform teachingSupporting Research•Regular participation in meetings with researchers, school and district leaders, and SERP staff•Conduct formal classroom observations as part of study on fidelity of implementation•Routinely share teacher feedback and coach surveys with researchersThis is a full-time, 11-month position (August-June) beginning immediately, which will run through June 2015.
