Position Summary:
Enhance their experience and/or education by having an understanding of the manual skills needed for scientific research. This position is designed to enhance the learning experiences of university or high school students, by either furthering their experiential experiences or by giving them opportunities to broaden their exposure to science. It may also be used to meet academic requirements for experiential learning through their course work.

This position will investigate novel molecular mechanisms and pathways regulating intracellular cholesterol homeostasis and response to cholesterol lowering drugs in cellular models using various molecular biology based assays. This work will encompass two major projects: 1) Assess the role of microRNAs in mediating statin-induced changes in HNRNAP1 regulation, and 2) Perform bioinformatic analyses to assess statin-induced differences in small-RNA expression levels associated with statin efficacy.

Position Requirements:
Minimum Education and Experience: 1-2 years of college including courses in the natural sciences or graduation from high school. Knowledge/Skills: Ability to achieve a basic understanding of routine laboratory procedures or have the ability to be trained. Knowledge of dietary assessment and measurements of body fat by skinfolds and air displacement. Prior experience working in a molecular biology based laboratory beyond enrollment in an undergraduate molecular biology lab class. Able to perform a wide variety of laboratory procedures including RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, and quantitative real-time PCR. Must have prior experience in cell culture with excellent sterile technique and have the desire and ability to learn new methodologies. Must be familiar with computer data entry, Microsoft Word and Excel, have excellent organizational and communication skills, and be able to develop and optimize protocols. Must be have programming skills and previous experience in bioinformatic analyses.
