Performs intermediate protective service and human support work in the day to day care, supervision, and security of detainees in a secured detention setting while assuring the safety and well being of all detained children; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.
Essential Job Functions*:
Position requires medium work exerting up to 20 pounds; involves standing and walking, both indoors and outdoors for extended periods; Sedentary tasks minimal; Must be physically able to intervene in physical altercations between clients as well as protection of self. Position involves physical activity of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, and grasping; Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and receive detailed information; through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; Visual acuity is required for determining depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, operation of machines; determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. Worker is subject to noise and hazards. Worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and required to wear specialized protective equipment.
Supervises activities to assure safe and secure operations; Monitors discipline of detainees through the systematic implelmentation of approved behavior management programs; Develops and implements various psycho-educational groups as assigned; Counsels children on issues specific to their detention adjustment; Utilizes verbal and physical crisis intervention and application of restraint techniques; Provides therapeutic recreational activities as directed; Maintains daily program schedule; Supervises detainee mealtimes; Observes, monitors, and records in the daily log, observations specific to safety and security; Models acceptable and appropriate behavior in conflict resolution grievance resolution, language, conduct, and dress; Provides crisis intervention and exercises independent judgement in crisis situations as needed; Maintains case files; Conducts risk assessment amd assigns detainees to appropriated living units; Reports all safety and security violations to immediate supervisor; Complies with standards promulgated by the Board of the Department of Juvenile Justice and Interdepartment Liscensure Standards; Reports to work on assigned duty schedule; Performs other reasonable duties as assigned.
Administer medication as necessary under instruction and supervision of a physician; Complete all required written documentation of release and intake. Assists in preparing detainees for court, release, appointments, etc. as needed.

General knowledge of the interest, problems, and activities of adolescents; General knowledge of psychological behavior, first aid, and personal hygiene; Some knowledge of human behavior, growth and development, group dynamics, crisis intervention, and counseling techniques; Ability to communicate with detainees, staff, law enforcement personnel, parents and/or legal guardians, and others effectively, orally and in writing; Ability to make decisions under stressful conditions; Ability to understand and work effectively with juvenile delinquents; Ability to organize, supervise, and maintain discipline; Ability to supervise and train personnel; Ability to maintain good working relationships with coworkers and with the public; Ability to exercise sound independent judgement and to safely and effectively physical restrain out-of-control detainees.
Education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in phychology, social work, sociology, special education, child care or related or high school diploma or equivalent with demonstrated successful experience in the care and superision of maladjusted juveniles, preferably with a secured setting.
Special License and Certificates:
Possession of a valid drivers license. Possession of or ability to obtain certification in CPR, First Aid, and physical restraint.
