Using knowledge and skills attained through Master’s level education, this position provides library reference and readers’ advisory service to the public. Position is also involved in developing library programs, collections, promotional materials, and statistical records. This position reports to and takes direction from the Youth Services Manager and the Library Director. This position interacts extensively with other City employees and the public. This position does not provide direction to other employees.

- Serves library patrons by searching the library catalog and print and online resources to locate information; offers recommendations based on reading and interest levels; provides information from electronic databases and Internet sources; assists patrons with the use of the catalog, Internet, and other computer-based resources; and provides referrals to other resources as needed.
- Develops and implements children’s or young adult programs: plans activities, determines required supplies, calculates costs, tracks attendance, and evaluates outcomes.
- Develops assigned collections: analyzes, selects, and maintains children's and young adult collections, withdraws outdated materials, and interprets and applies usage reports and statistics.
- Participates in promotional activities to educate active and potential patrons about library services and programs. May include design and production of brochures, flyers, printed and online calendars, electronic newsletters, and library web pages.
- Ensures efficient operational functions through the preparation and distribution of statistical records and reports.
- Encourages reading and literacy through the development and maintenance of displays and reading lists.
- Furthers professional knowledge through participation in workshops and professional meetings.
Formal Education / Knowledge
Work requires specialized knowledge in a professional or technical field. Work requires professional level of knowledge which is acquired in a Master's degree-level of study, M.L.S. or M.S in Library Science from an American Library Association accredited university.
No experience required. One year of public library experience preferred.
Certification and Other Requirements
Valid Texas Class C Driver's License
Advanced - Ability to read literature, books, reviews, scientific or technical journals, abstracts, financial reports, and/or legal documents. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Advanced - Ability to write editorials, journals, speeches, manuals, or critiques. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in at the college level or above. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
Receives general direction: The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. The employee may choose the appropriate procedure or policy. Performance is reviewed periodically.
Supervisory / Organizational Control
Work requires the occasional direction or supervision of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, temporary employees, or volunteers.
Work requires analysis and judgment in accomplishing diversified duties. Requires the exercise of independent thinking within the limits of policies, standards, and precedents.

Prioritizes activities, manages details, and meets deadlines for work assignments. Searches specialized library database software to locate and interpret library holdings and patron records. Assigned work schedule regularly includes evenings and weekends.
