To develop, coordinate, deliver, implement, and evaluate Zoo education programs at the Little Rock Zoo targeting underserved communities and schools in the City of Little Rock.
Essential Job Functions:
Develops, coordinates, delivers, implements, and evaluates Zoo education programs and interpretive materials for use in underserved schools and the communities to increase awareness and community participation and understanding of the Zoo’s wildlife and conservation mission. Conducts research and surveys; collects and analyzes data to identify community and school needs prior to planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating programs. Conducts special surveys and research on assigned topics related to best practices, trends, operations, policies, procedures and programs; compiles information and prepares reports of findings. Develops and conducts evaluations and diagnostic studies to assess the quality and performance of education outreach programs; makes recommendations for modifications and implements upon approval. Presents on-site and off-site programs and educational activities. Attends community and civic group meetings with organizations and schools in promoting and developing partnerships in collaborating zoo education programs and activities. Recruits and trains volunteers to present Zoo educational classes, outreach programs, conduct Zoo tours, and assist with projects. Monitors program presentation schedules to ensure that a variety of groups are participating in the education programs. Provides assistance to the Education Curator in the preparation and monitoring of the annual budget for programs and projects. Prepares and presents Zoo promotional programs to encourage civic, professional, education and other groups to participate or sponsor various Zoo programs and events. Researches and identifies potential sources of funding for community and school program activities. Writes letters and other correspondence to schools, veteran groups, agencies and organizations to provide information regarding Zoo educational programs and activities. Serves as the Zoo representative at various functions in the absence of the Educator Curator as assigned. Provides assistance to the Education Curator in the development of Zoo master planning and implementation. Maintains hard copy and computer files and records relating to Zoo programs and activities. Establishes and maintains a database of community and school outreach contacts and other related information. Prepares narrative and statistical reports on various topics; maintains demographic data on groups participating in Zoo programs; maintains volunteer training records; prepares reports and maintains records on outreach activities and the results of these activities. Assigns and directs the activities of assigned part-time employees and volunteers. Operates a computer with database, desktop publishing, graphics, spreadsheet, and word processing software. Operates a City pool automobile in the performance of essential job functions.
Minimum Qualifications and Additional Requirements:
These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Public and Non-Profit Management, or a related area, two (2) years of work experience in community outreach programming, public and community relations, and education, or related area; one (1) year of experience in the development and presentation of education programs or related area; one (1) year of leadership or supervisory experience. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Must be available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
