DESCRIPTION

The Detroit Zoo is looking for outgoing individuals to be our Zoo Mascot for 2013! They must work well with others, including children and guests of all ages. They must be in good physical condition to both wear heavy costumes and stand or walk for extended periods of time.

Mascots must be able to read individuals' social cues to understand the level of interaction each guest may want. Ideal applicants for the position of mascot should be motivated in generating enthusiasm.

DUTIES

Mascots must develop the character of the mascot for the Zoo. They must perform at all DZS locations including the Belle Isle Nature Zoo (BINZ) as necessary and at any press appearances or charity events.

They must work in conjunction with the DZS's marketing and events team, public and guest relations, on-site sales, community relations and operations departments.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have experience working with people of all ages; experience working with children is a plus.
  • Must be willing to work/perform in a mascot costume.
  • Must be able to properly fit into a mascot costume. Bona fide occupational qualification for this is that the person must not be taller than 5'6".
  • Must perform mascot duties in a manner deemed acceptable according to DZS standards.
  • Must be energetic, in good physical and mental health and also be able to withstand high degrees of heat and/or humidity inside of the closed mascot costume and be able to lift approximately 50 lbs.
  • Must be flexible with regard to scheduling and be available for events on weekends as well as during the week.
  • Must possess a highly personable disposition and animated personality with good interpersonal communication (verbal and non-verbal) skills and creativity. Dance or performing arts background preferred.
  • Must be friendly, courteous, reliable and punctual.
  • Service-oriented team player who can take initiative, work independently and quickly adapt in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work with, direct, and relate well with co-workers, staff and guests while maintaining the standards of the DZS.
  • Before hire, must clear a thorough back ground check and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must be able to provide own transportation.
  • Hours may vary.
