A Peace Corps Response Volunteer is needed to serve as a Computer Science Education Specialist for the National Institute for Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE), a division of the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACYT) Public Research Centers System. As a research center with international prestige, INAOE’s mission is to accomplish the creation, advancement and dissemination of knowledge in order to contribute to the development of Mexico. INAOE is also committed to national growth through the promotion of social values like: solidarity, creativity and competitiveness. Peace Corps Mexico partners with public research centers under the umbrella of CONACYT, the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), and universities to strengthen their technical capacities by collaborating in projects and providing training to students, professors, scientists and administrative staff. These institutions strive to advance science and technology and to provide knowledge that enables staff and students to contribute to their country’s sustainable economic and social development.
A Computer Science Education Specialist, with intermediate Spanish skills and experience teaching computer science at a high school or university level, is needed to promote Computer Science (CS) and Computational Thinking (CT) in high school and middle school curriculums. This includes creating a series of materials and courses geared towards spreading CS and CT educational methods, ideas and training for high school teachers and other academics, including University teacher education departments. In collaboration with INAOE’s Directors of Research and Computer Science Department, CONACYT’s Information Technology Network, and the Mexican AI Society; the Education Computer Science Education Specialist will be responsible for creating, adapting, and implementing materials and courses for high-school CS/CT teachers. The Volunteer’s objectives would be to develop and implement CS and CT educational methods to teach high school teachers. The ultimate goal is to improve Mexican students’ skills in computational thinking.
Bachelor’s Degree in computer science, mathematics, information technologies or education; advanced degree is preferred along with experience in the CS and CT fields.
Ability to comfortably communicate with people (in Spanish) who are as varied as top scientists, community and educational leaders, and local citizens.
Experience teaching computer science at a high school or university level; or participating in the design and implementation of computer science courses and materials.
Experience implementing or promoting Computational Thinking in teaching courses.
