The State University of New York College at Plattsburgh welcomes nominations and applications for the position of Dean of Arts & Science. The position will begin July 1, 2013. The Dean is appointed by the President and reports directly to the College's Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. A member institution of the State University of New York, SUNY Plattsburgh is a comprehensive regional college located in the beautiful Champlain Valley on Lake Champlain and near the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York. SUNY Plattsburgh offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs and courses in the liberal arts and professional studies to its 6,000 undergraduate and nearly 600 graduate students. The more than 1,100 faculty and staff focus on the development and needs of individual students. The College, through its 30 academic departments representing a wide range of arts, sciences, and professional fields, offers bachelor's degrees, combined bachelors/masters degrees, and master's degrees.
The Dean of Arts & Science plays a pivotal role on our campus. Arts & Science is the largest of the academic divisions of the college, providing the foundation for a career, citizenship, and an ethical life for all students through a strong grounding in the Liberal Arts. It houses more than half of the academic departments on campus, including a proportionate share of student majors and faculty, and includes programs in Humanities, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology. In addition, Arts & Science provides nearly all of the courses in SUNY Plattsburgh’s General Education program, the Honors program, and the content areas for all undergraduate education degrees leading to teacher certification.
Responsibilities include: The successful applicant will:
- provide effective leadership and oversight for all aspects of the Arts & Science curriculum, including more than 100 major and minor programs as well as the vast majority of the General Education program required of all students;
- participate in the recruitment, retention, and evaluation of full-time and adjunct faculty and professional and clerical staff;
- act as liaison between the Division of Arts & Science and the other divisions of the college;
- plan and administer the divisional budget;
- represent and advocate for Arts & Science to the administration, the College Council, the SUNY system, and the Plattsburgh community;
- promote excellence and innovation in teaching;
- coordinate academic programs and personnel with the Branch Campus;
- assist in the College's planning and assessment programs;
- promote scholarship, research and grantsmanship in the college.
Furthermore, there are expectations of significant participation and leadership in student recruitment and retention, faculty evaluation and development, and campus-wide strategic planning. In addition, the Dean of Arts and Science will have continuing opportunities to pursue classroom teaching and/or direct student supervision in their major field of research. In light of these responsibilities, the successful applicant will have a proven history of faculty advocacy, a reputation for fair leadership, and an understanding of the crucial role the Liberal Arts play in a university education. The candidate will recognize and encourage excellent teaching, supported by a continuous research agenda, and will value faculty service. They will also respect collaborative faculty governance.
Required Qualifications: A terminal degree in a field of study within the disciplines represented in Arts & Science at SUNY Plattsburgh with five or more years of prior experience in academic administration at the level of Department Chair or above, at least 10 years college-level teaching, and a strong record of scholarship. The candidate should possess the academic credentials required for the rank of full professor in one of the academic departments in the division.
Preferred Qualifications: The Search Committee will consider evidence of dynamic, innovative leadership; a history of interdisciplinary collaboration; experience with assessment; experience with curriculum and program design; experience as an academic leader in the area of general education; a record of advancing diversity, civic responsibility, and social justice in hiring and advancement practice as well as in the curriculum; and a reputation as a good communicator.
