Position Description:
The 4-year program leading to the Medical Doctor degree will begin to provide completely centralized preclinical curriculum support to the faculty who lead the courses and teach in the program. This includes scheduling, exam question entry, PowerPoint preparation, team-based learning support, grade entry, exam proctoring, and more. There are 160-180 students in each of the 4 years of the program.
In 2013 a new curriculum will be devised and operationalized; it will go into effect in August 2014. Currently, we require first-year students to take 6 courses and second-year students to take 13 courses that together constitute the preclinical curriculum. In the clinical curriculum, third-year students currently take 8 clerkships and fourth-year students take 7 courses, a combination of requirements and electives.
The new curriculum has not been completely designed yet, but it is likely to take a form along these lines: about 12 fully integrated preclinical courses required in the first 18 months; a tracked summer experience after the first year; the clerkships to begin in March instead of June, and to be organized in a modular rather than customized form; a much more rigorous fourth year. Thus, every year in the 4-year program will experience a complete revision that will require not only curriculum content redesign (which will be handled by the faculty) but also a complete upheaval in the way we deliver the curriculum and required services: hour-by-hour, day-to-day, and course-to-course logistics, room scheduling, teaching faculty schedules, staff support for active learning techniques (which will take about 80% of class time instead of the 20% they occupy now), management of and training for out-of-Chapel-Hill learning sites (where 50% of clinical curriculum is delivered), creation of staff support structures for courses that don’t currently exist, etc. This will be a highly complex task, and there are few guidelines in existence for it.
The program seeks an educator with an excellent understanding of systems and logistics as well as significant supervisory experience to work alongside and manage a team of 5 or 6 staff to support the faculty and the curriculum in its present and new forms.
The Director of Curriculum Support will be a key member of the highly integrated management team that oversees one of the nation’s premier public medical school education programs.
