TITLE: Manager of Communications (022014), Special Olympics Illinois (SOILL)

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and execute on-going media and public relations strategies and tactics to promote the mission and programs of Special Olympics Illinois throughout the state
Lead/participate in various communications initiatives (internal and external), including the Annual Report, newsletter, event marketing strategies and social media campaigns, donor communications and website content development
Ability to develop compelling and timely content, and message and frame key issues to appeal to constituents
Support organization events and fund-raising promotions with production or adaptation of communications materials (written copy, press releases, video, audio)
Provide writing and editing support for outbound communications to insure they adhere to brand guidelines while maximizing marketing effectiveness
Speak to the media on behalf of Special Olympics Illinois and create talking points, scripts, etc. for other staff, board, athlete-Global Messengers, etc. as needed
Contribute expertise and vision to marketing and development meetings
Complete and submit expense reports in a timely manner
Support the Sr. Director and Marketing & Communications Team in promoting the Special Olympics Illinois mission
Volunteer at organization events to gain an understanding of available opportunities
Represent Special Olympics Illinois in a professional manner at all times

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university (preferably in communications, public relations, journalism or English)
Minimum of 3 - 5 years of prior industry experience from a PR agency or corporate/in-house environment in communications or public relations
Strong track record of positioning an organization to achieve tangible outcomes
Strategic thinker who excels at messaging to multiple audiences on multiple platforms
Storytelling expertise and the ability to develop compelling and timely content
Ability to “hit the ground running” and make recommendations to staff on existing communications strategies and methods to be implemented
Exceptional writing and a proactive communications style, with strength in getting out ahead of issues and events
Strong knowledge of philanthropic and non-profit sector, ability to be thoughtful in outreach and communications
Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
Detail orientated and strong organizational skills
Excellent computer skills including proficiency with Microsoft Office products
Strong ability to work independently and learn quickly
Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines
Valid driver’s license

WORK SCHEDULE:

Based in the Lombard, IL office
Monday through Friday with evenings and weekends as the position demands
Some in-state travel, including some evening, overnight and weekend travel
Reports to Senior Director—Marketing & Communications
