Outpatient Nurse/Research Position
The nurse will provide clinical nursing care and assist in research as part of a large-scale, NIH-funded clinical trial. The goal of the four-year trial is to improve symptoms and quality of life in people with chronic heart failure at three hospitals in Denver, Colorado. Hours per week negotiable; up to a full-time position is possible.
1. Provide a structured nursing assessment and intervention for outpatients with chronic heart failure through in-person and phone visits
2. Screen and enroll inpatients and outpatients according to the study protocol. Quickly establish collaborative relationships with study patients
3. Complete case report forms and other study documentation by reviewing medical records and assessing study subjects
4. Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care and study activities
5. Document nursing visits and other study related activities in electronic medical records and study databases
6. Adhere to the study protocol
7. Complete research training and obtain appropriate credentials at the study sites: Denver VA Medical Center, University of Colorado Hospital, and Denver Health
8. Collect and manage diagnostic specimens
9. Evaluate, document, and report adverse events to the PI, DSMB, or IRB
10. Assist the Principal Investigator or study team with administrative or other activities; complete other duties as assigned
1. Minimum of 2 years clinical nursing experience
2. Active Colorado RN license and BLS certification
3. Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with a diverse team, including students, administrators, other nurses, psychologists, social workers, and physicians
4. Excellent written, verbal, organizational, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills
5. Highly motivated to interact with and quickly establish rapport with chronically ill patients, their informal caregivers/family, and their care providers; patient-centered communication skills important
6. Attention to detail; ability to work independently; flexibility and ability to make changes in work schedule to meet the demands of the research study
7. Ability to learn new computer systems quickly; working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs including Word, Access and Excel
8. Knowledge of informed consent and HIPAA procedures
9. Phlebotomy skills
10. Experience working with cardiac patients and using Motivational Interviewing preferred, but not required

1. Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment and hospital
2. Subject/Patient interaction
3. Extensive computer use
4. Occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds or more
5. Daily and frequent walking between offices, patient locations, etc.
6. Travel required, mostly within the Denver metro area (transportation not provided)
