Segment Producer

NFL Network Segment Producer’s duties and responsibilities

  • Responsible for producing a wide range of content for NFL Network shows; produces segments and other pieces from start to finish for air; these segments are primarily produced live to air
  • Responsible for generating and researching NFL Media content ideas
  • Produce elements (live, taped and pre-produced) that air during the telecast of NFL Network shows
  • Lead tape producer for NFL Network remote and studio shows
  • Adjust segment content to accommodate breaking news situations
  • Coordinates with the on-air staff to write accurate and informative content as it relates to the segment
  • Occasionally produces assigned sports news programs independently with regular guidance from the Coordinating Producer
  • Work is reviewed by the Coordinating Producer at regular intervals and milestones
  • Uses a high level of sports knowledge and news judgment to determine the agenda, concepts and content of the assigned segment within the show
  • Supervises or takes part in individual segments
  • Produce and write both hard news and feature copy under deadlines
  • Copy-edit associate producer scripts
  • Supervise, train, and mentor associate producers
  • Choreograph all segments in detail
  • Preview video and sound of assigned segments
  • Explain edit instructions in detail on edit form
  • Communicate daily story development with senior producer and line producer
  • Be in control room during airing of assigned segment
  • Pitch story ideas
  • Take part in future story planning and development

NFL Network Segment Producer’s qualifications

  • 4 to 6 years of progressively complex related studio or related production experience
  • College degree preferred
  • Has good production skills related to sporting events
  • Has a strong knowledge of live television production dynamics and working knowledge of the equipment and technologies in the control room
  • Able to carry out a broad range of assignments that arrange from segment producing to live broadcasts with little or no preparation time in between
  • Has good knowledge of football and sports history
  • Has some supervisory experience with good leadership skills.
  • Good writing and copy editing skills
  • Knowledge of television production and video editing in digital and analog environments
  • Technical knowledge required, must have knowledge of what “works” on television and what is realistic to accomplish in time allotted for segment production
  • Specific knowledge of television production technique used in a digital control room
