Under the General Supervision of the Project Superintendent or Project Manager the Assistant Superintendent will assist the Superintendent in planning, coordinating, and directing the work of all subcontractors and Clients employees. A primary responsibility for the Assistant Superintendent/SSHO will be the responsibility for overseeing and coordinating the planning, implementation and supervision of the Accident Prevention Plan. The Assistant Superintendent/SSHO will be on site at all times when high risk activities are being performed. Will be responsible for the overall management of the safety and occupational health program. The Assistant Superintendent/SSHO will conduct daily safety and health inspections and maintain a written log which includes area/operation inspected, date of inspection, identified hazards, recommended corrective actions, estimated and actual dates of corrections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Review company Quality Control Plan and Safety Plan and work with corporate Safety Officer to make the Safety Plan project specific.
  • Have a thorough and working knowledge of the plans and specifications or project scope of work and Quality Control requirements.
  • Organize and prepare the contractor’s safety plan and Activity Hazard Analysis for each definable feature of work.
  • Provide safety indoctrination to all construction site visitors.
  • Ensure the Accident Prevention Plan is carried out.
  • Assists the superintendent in the management and conduct of all work activities occurring on site.
  • Conducts daily walkthrough of the site ensuring work is being accomplished safely and occupational health is not compromised.
  • Attends and participates in all preparatory and initial quality control phase meetings.
  • Conducts weekly safety meetings for all workers.
  • Conducts monthly supervisory safety meetings.
  • Provides accident reports.
  • Provides a daily safety report of activities performed.
  • Perform no less that daily inspections of the work and require any defective work to be removed and obtain and maintain a photo record of the project.
  • Review and interpret plans, blueprints, site layouts, specifications, and construction methods to ensure compliance to legal requirements and safety regulations.
  • Inspect and monitor construction sites to ensure adherence to safety standards, building codes, and specifications.

  • Knowledge of acceptable construction site practices including occupational safety and health regulations.

  • Determine the kind of tools and equipment needed to complete each task assignment.
  • Must be comfortable with high intensity work environment.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office products required.

QUALIFICATIONS: Experience, Education, and Certifications (Relevant experience may be substituted for any of the following– other qualifications may be considered as equivalents, at the discretion of the hiring authority)

  • Associate’s degree in Construction management or industrial safety.
  • Completion of OSHA 30 hour safety course within the last 3 years.
  • Competent person training
  • Current completion of First Aid and CPR
  • Proficient in PC based programs including Microsoft and construction scheduling programs.


  • A four-year degree in an accredited construction related curriculum or a combination of work experience/education equivalent to a four (4) year degree.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of construction field experience in the role of Site Safety Health Officer on similar projects ($5-$10M)
  • An average of at least twenty-four (24) hours of formal safety training each year for the past four (4) years.
  • Government contracting experience.
  • Contractor Quality Control Certificate.
  • Prior successful military service in either combat arms or military construction/engineering.

This position requires working out of doors and driving in extreme heart/cold and possibly rainy weather. While performing the duties of this job the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May supervise subcontractors or client crews.

Additional Qualifying Factors
Must be legally eligible to work in the United States (proof of eligibility will be required upon offer of employment). Must be able to pass a background check, possess valid driver’s license (any state) and be able to provide clean driving record and current vehicle insurance coverage.
As a condition of employment, must pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check results. This position may be subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing on an unannounced basis.
