The SPCS (Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies, formally EPGY - Education Program for Gifted Youth) at Stanford University provides gifted students world wide with an opportunity to take advanced courses both online and through residential summer programs. The role of the Senior Systems Administrator (SSA) is to manage the Information Technology infrastructure at Stanford’s SPCS. The SSA is expected to carefully evaluate the ongoing IT service needs of SPCS and propose plans for equipment and software to the CTO. The SSA will be responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, monitoring, and maintenance of all server-based hardware and software systems, and for ensuring those systems meet or exceed SPCS’s uptime and availability requirements.
The SSA will manage IT vendor relations and coordinate substantive hardware and software maintenance efforts with them. Additionally, the SSA will tie into the extensive Stanford IT resources to enhance SPCS’s own services. And this individual will participate in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation with the infrastructure.
The SSA will effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, the analyses of issues, alternatives, conclusions, and outcomes affecting IT systems. As needed, the SSA will also establish and document procedures and practices, with department approval.
Depending on experience, the SSA will administer various database instances, including Oracle and MySQL. The SSA will coordinate release cycles in conjunction with end users and Development and be responsible for code deployment, including database updates. This position will work closely with desktop and technical support as well.
Finally, the SSA will be expected to be on call for scheduled times outside of the regular work day to provide emergency support and to help maintain SPCS’s goals for server availability.
The position is for a hands-on systems administration professional, reporting to the CTO. Management of junior administrators may also be required.
The Senior Systems Administrator will have an undergraduate degree preferably in computer science, mathematics or other technical area. An advanced degree is preferred.
A thorough knowledge of Linux, particularly RedHat Linux Advanced Server, VMWare virtualization, and web and database servers is required. Experience as a DBA (Oracle and MySQL) is highly desirable.
The SSA must possess excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical issues to non-technical users. Being a process-oriented thinker with the ability to formulate, document, and implement policy will be important to your success.
A motivated self-starter with a high level of professionalism, excellent interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and ability to interact with a broad spectrum of people, including faculty, academic staff, students, and vendors will round out the ideal individual.
