Middlebury College and the Center for Institutional and Social Change (the Center), housed at Columbia Law School, seek a full-time Research and Program Associate to play a key role in the design, implementation, and assessment of a new and ambitious program funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation entitled, “Creating Connections Consortium” (C3). In partnership with the Center, Connecticut College, Middlebury College, and Williams College have formalized a reciprocal relationship with the University of California at Berkeley and Columbia University to build a diverse professoriate through a set of integrated strategies, described more fully at .
This is a 3-year term position.
This position will be based at either Middlebury College or Columbia University, and will require significant travel between New York City and Middlebury, Vermont. Travel to C3 institutions and events will also be necessary.

This position, working in collaboration with the Center and C3 leadership, will build the capacity to integrate the programs, strategies, and institutional partners so that C3 becomes an incubator of innovation for institutional diversity. The position will combine the functions of hands on coaching, strategic design, cohort development, institutional integration, network development, reflection, assessment and documentation. It will play a critical role in informing the design and implementation of C3 about the perspectives and experiences of students, fellows, and mentors, and conducting research on state-of-the-art knowledge and best practices from participating institutions, and conducting ongoing assessment of C3’s program, implementation, and outcomes. Specifically, Research and Program Associate will:
Collaborate in integrated design and development of plans, strategies, and events;
Collaboratively develop and implement research and assessment plans designed simultaneously to track, assess, and guide C3 strategy and to foster collective impact;
Work with Institutional Research offices at participating institutions to facilitate data gathering at institutional level;
Undertake reflective inquiry, strategic mapping and analysis to identifying pathways, barriers, relationships, and best practices;
Foster cohort development and integration of C3 programs and institutions;
Build capacity to use C3 events and programs as learning, networking and development opportunities;
Facilitate information sharing and assist in building a learning community
Conduct tool development and best practices research, including for recruitment, selection, retention, support, cohort development, and cross-institutional collaboration;
Document and disseminate results of the collective inquiry and research;
Report to C3 regularly and thoroughly on the progress of the initiative. Be accountable to supervisors at Middlebury College and The Center for Institutional and Social Change
Specific tasks include helping to develop strategic design of the initiative; co-facilitating workshops; conducting collaborative inquiry sessions, literature reviews, interviews, focus groups, data analysis, concept and network mapping; and designing and implementing surveys and methods of identifying shared metrics and aligning data.
The Research and Program Associate must have a M.A. degree (Ph.D. is preferred) in a strong research field, preferably with an organizational, cultural, or systems focus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Candidates must have substantial background in higher education, qualitative research experience, demonstrated familiarity with quantitative techniques and research design, and an understanding of social networks. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, organization, collaboration and communication skills, as well as energy, initiative, high motivation, and ability to think strategically. Strong evidence of collaborative work, systems thinking and excellent writing skills are required.
Candidates must have experience working in a higher education setting, a demonstrated interest in advancing diversity, and the ability to work with faculty, students, and administrators from diverse backgrounds and fields.
