The Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore and Washington, DC is seeking an Assistant Group Supervisor/IT Network Engineer, Telecommunications Group.
Assistant Group Supervisor in the Network & Telecommunications Group (ITC) partnering with management to provide leadership and oversight of personnel issues for 42 staff members including hiring, training, coaching, mentoring and professional development for the Groups staff. Directly manage the activities of the Network Architecture and Special Networks section (ITC-2) including 10 staff members. Provide enterprise-level architecture design and engineering for classified and unclassified voice and data network projects.
Partner with group management to lead the implementation of the Groups strategic and tactical voice and data network objectives. Work with group management on all personnel issues taking a lead role in the hiring, training, coaching, mentoring, and professional development of the staff to achieve these objectives. Supervise the Network Architecture and Special Networks Section which includes assigning work tasks to the enterprise architecture and SCNI classified network teams. Appraise, coach, mentor and oversee the professional development of the staff in these teams. Ensure projects being undertaken by these teams conform to all applicable APL and DoD policies. Service manager responsible for enterprise architecture design and change management review of all changes being implemented in the unclassified network environment. Set standards for the design and documentation of operational systems. Oversee evaluation of new systems and technologies in the ITC test lab environment and make recommendations for network hardware and configurations that support sponsored project requirements, improve the unclassified voice and data network performance and maintainability, and strengthen the Laboratorys infosec posture. Regularly meet with APL Department representatives and customers to better understand their current and future requirements. Work closely with the Network Operations section to improve performance and operation of the unclassified voice and data networks. Participate in Information Technology Service Department (ITSD) extended management team activities, and on ITSD committees such as the enterprise architecture and change management committees.
Required: BS or equivalent years of IT related professional work experience. Ten years experience working in a complex network environment with five years experience specifically working on enterprise-wide network projects. Experience should include leadership of technical engineering and support staff, either as a line manager or project manager of a team. Demonstrated ability to interface with all levels of management, customers, and staff. Motivated to develop innovative solutions to tackle both technical and managerial challenges. Previous success with conflict resolution and making difficult decisions for example: telling the customer no and identifying alternate solutions.
Desired: BS in IT related field (computer science, engineering) Prior management experience implementing and maintaining voice and data network systems. Line or project management of teams with 10 or more people. One or more current certifications: JNCIA, CCNA, JNCIS, CCNP, JNCIE, CCIE.
Special Work Conditions
Flexibility to work outside of normal business hours, to include some overnight and/or weekend work, in response to service outages and project implementation tasks. Occasional travel within the US required (less than 10%).
